The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

Liverpool find a familiar cutting edge. Hull’s deadball specialist provides the difference, while an array of doubts come creeping as teamsheets and pose early questions.

The Game Changer

Once again, Daniel Sturridge delivered the winner. Brendan Rodgers’ slick passing outfit failed to produce the volume of chances we saw in the opener against Stoke but it didn’t matter to Sturridge. He took his one major opportunity with typical aplomb and, sharing a pitch with Benteke and his bandwagon, gave us plenty of food for thought.

Two games, two goals and a record that now shows eight strikes in his last seven league outings: with Villa’s strikers starved in the opening period, then denied by Simon Mignolet in the second, Sturridge was left to underline his credentials as a striker option.

Benteke and Tottenham’s Roberto Soldado have tempted big investment, while Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud has emerged as another potential prospect. Sturridge has to be added to that list of those contesting a spot in our forward lines and, with early season fitness doubts seemingly dispersed, he is perhaps presenting the strongest case of all.

The Underused

The search for a budget asset amongst the promoted teams was intense in the pre-season, with Robbie Brady’s name firmly in the mix. Despite the chatter, Brady attracted less than 1% of Fantasy Premier League managers and it was those select few who benefited from his winning spot-kick against Hull today. Brady epitomises a set-piece hogger: central to Hull’s free-kicks and on penalty duty, his delicious left-foot delivery will likely be key to their chances of survival over the season.

Is that enough to tempt investment? Today’s double figure returns should certainly bring him onto the radar for the masses and you have to wonder, while the likes of Ross Barkley and Pajtim Kasami continue to earn suitors in the budget bracket, whether Brady is the most convincing contender for that fifth midfield spot.

The Selection Poser

Uncertainty is building with the teamsheets still providing as many questions as answers.

Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne failed to earn an instant recall at St Mary’s only to emerge from the bench to replace recent bandwagon, Luke Shaw. The left-back was withdrawn having suffered further knee problems in the first half and could yet be an early concern for Gameweek 3.

Another popular budget purchase, the aforementioned Pajtim Kasami, was again deployed up in support of Dimitar Berbatov in today’s early kick-off. The 21-year-old attracted almost 90,000 new owners following his winner at Sunderland – can he really reward that investment? With Darren Bent off the mark from the bench and Bryan Ruiz in reserve, it looks highly unlikely.

Steven Whittaker earned a stay of execution in the Norwich lineup with Seb Bassong still absent, while team-mate Robert Snodgrass disappointed with just a single point return after being left benched by Chris Hughton. It could be very different tale for Snodgrass and Whittaker when the Canaries face Southampton next weekend, however.

Elsewhere, Kevin Mirallas was hauled off for the second match running having squandered further opportunities. It’s too early to get twitchy but the Belgian needs find an end product soon; it may not be long before Roberto Martinez starts to consider Arouna Kone for a role on the right of his three-man attack if chances go on being spurned.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Well I certainly hope so. I think people underrate them. They did come 11th after all and I think this season should see them solidly mid-table. There were five new signings on the pitch today and they haven't really gelled yet. That, and Bassong was missing as well as Snodgrass, and I think Whittaker is a bit of a weak link, would rather see Ryan Bennett coming in than him.

I don't think Snodders was fully fit though because he barely argued with the linesman when he had a decision given against him - clearly not 100% yet 😉

Barfa as always looks the best of a disappointing bunch at Newcastle, but they seem really dysfunctional and I wouldn't invest right now. Actually bet against the Newcastle attack by playing Collins over Turner this week.

I know Mirallas has blanked twice, but you can only go off the stats and he's gotta deliver sooner or later. He got impressive returns last year in limited minutes. Mirallas and Bony looks OK.

Looking like Sturridge has significantly better goal involvement than Coutinho, can be very frustrating owning the assister. If only Coutinho had more goal threat so he could do it himself. Did come pretty close in GW1 mind.

Coutinho was stuck out on the left. He's a #10 best played behind the striker, and much better there than Aspas. Rogers is desperate to bring in a left winger so that Coutinho can be in his more effective position. If he doesn't get anyone, Suarez will go there on his return. So I'm fully confident Coutinho will come good and be the player of the season. I'm hanging onto him.

Wildcard activated. Didn't want to come on here and be talked out of it.

I had 5 (possibly 6 if I include Foster who I would've played) absentees for this week:
Ivan, Hazard, Benteke, Anelka and Kompany

With Anelka dropping in price, I had to make a transfer and no one at 5.5 took my fancy so that meant I would have had to do a -4 tonight and get rid of Kompany too. I thought... I need more time. I need more info. Sod it. Wildcard.

    Wish me luck.

Thank you. I thought so too but plenty would have told me to just do the -4 later and not worry about the price drop.

My other big problem was even if I did that, I had to play Chester (mci), Ward (SUN) and Kim (EVE) in a patchwork makeshift XI. It would have undoubtedly been a crap week and I'd probably wildcard in the international break anyway.

Wow. That is some stat. Yeah I'm gonna try and capitalise on Kasami's price change in particular as I have no intention of keeping him.

All I had to do to decide was look at my team for next week:
          Boruc
          Toure Ward Chester(mci!)
          Walcott Coutinho Mirallas Kim
          Soldado

That's 9 with no subs. A -4 would help me make an XI (4-4-2) but jeez that lineup would be shaky.

Yeah gonna try and make a few 0.1s if I can but mainly it was due to my team's current situation.

The thing is, I'm not even worrying about this week (apart from having a city player or two) as I know it shouldn't be high scoring, I'm looking to GW4 onwards as the fixture swing for Utd, Ars, Tot and Liv is considerable. Even though they all face off in GW3, I obviously won't be ignoring their assets.

The rotation in that Swansea midfield would worry me, but I'd imagine he stands a better chance than most of holding on to minutes.

ps. Bony seems to like his tap ins, once he gets up and running Hernandez must stand a good chance of providing plenty of those tap ins.

I know right, I remember when you had him in the DGW. I just can't believe how you catch his good times. I had Giroud twice last year I think when he was in donkey mode.

Ward-Prowse might stand the better chance of consistent returns, but I reckon Barkley has more explosive potential. Short term Barkley (also stand to make a few £ on him if lucky), Ward-Prowse for the longer term. In my view!

It's will be a double FT.
        Iva->Collins, Lukaku->Soldado, with 0.3 left in bank.
I still can afford the tranfers if Lukaku falls and Soldado rises. But then I will be losing lot of values.

If the -8 has a chance of leading to further hits in the future (say to get Benteke back in or the like) might be worth the wildcard. A -8 that saves more in the future though, and the wildcard for a more desperate time, could be a good move.
