The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

Liverpool find a familiar cutting edge. Hull’s deadball specialist provides the difference, while an array of doubts come creeping as teamsheets and pose early questions.

The Game Changer

Once again, Daniel Sturridge delivered the winner. Brendan Rodgers’ slick passing outfit failed to produce the volume of chances we saw in the opener against Stoke but it didn’t matter to Sturridge. He took his one major opportunity with typical aplomb and, sharing a pitch with Benteke and his bandwagon, gave us plenty of food for thought.

Two games, two goals and a record that now shows eight strikes in his last seven league outings: with Villa’s strikers starved in the opening period, then denied by Simon Mignolet in the second, Sturridge was left to underline his credentials as a striker option.

Benteke and Tottenham’s Roberto Soldado have tempted big investment, while Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud has emerged as another potential prospect. Sturridge has to be added to that list of those contesting a spot in our forward lines and, with early season fitness doubts seemingly dispersed, he is perhaps presenting the strongest case of all.

The Underused

The search for a budget asset amongst the promoted teams was intense in the pre-season, with Robbie Brady’s name firmly in the mix. Despite the chatter, Brady attracted less than 1% of Fantasy Premier League managers and it was those select few who benefited from his winning spot-kick against Hull today. Brady epitomises a set-piece hogger: central to Hull’s free-kicks and on penalty duty, his delicious left-foot delivery will likely be key to their chances of survival over the season.

Is that enough to tempt investment? Today’s double figure returns should certainly bring him onto the radar for the masses and you have to wonder, while the likes of Ross Barkley and Pajtim Kasami continue to earn suitors in the budget bracket, whether Brady is the most convincing contender for that fifth midfield spot.

The Selection Poser

Uncertainty is building with the teamsheets still providing as many questions as answers.

Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne failed to earn an instant recall at St Mary’s only to emerge from the bench to replace recent bandwagon, Luke Shaw. The left-back was withdrawn having suffered further knee problems in the first half and could yet be an early concern for Gameweek 3.

Another popular budget purchase, the aforementioned Pajtim Kasami, was again deployed up in support of Dimitar Berbatov in today’s early kick-off. The 21-year-old attracted almost 90,000 new owners following his winner at Sunderland – can he really reward that investment? With Darren Bent off the mark from the bench and Bryan Ruiz in reserve, it looks highly unlikely.

Steven Whittaker earned a stay of execution in the Norwich lineup with Seb Bassong still absent, while team-mate Robert Snodgrass disappointed with just a single point return after being left benched by Chris Hughton. It could be very different tale for Snodgrass and Whittaker when the Canaries face Southampton next weekend, however.

Elsewhere, Kevin Mirallas was hauled off for the second match running having squandered further opportunities. It’s too early to get twitchy but the Belgian needs find an end product soon; it may not be long before Roberto Martinez starts to consider Arouna Kone for a role on the right of his three-man attack if chances go on being spurned.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I was thinking of getting rid of Terry but I might bench him and bring in Toure for Brayford instead.

Admittedly a 433 would have done well so far, considering the strong showing from the defences, it only takes a Michu brace to start shifting that.

The grand plan. 'Operation, get RVP'

GW3 Hazard -> Barkley (triple Everton for cardiff away)
GW4 Dzeko -> RVP (0.3 left to cover any price rises)

Will need to get rid of Mirrales at some point but this is an easy way to get RVP without hits or a WC. Do you think its worth it?

Good plan and nice playing. I'm a Barkley and had him in my team from the start. Figured he was the cheapie with the most potential and the best player among them. Think he is better than Gibson too but if Martinez really wants Gibson in the team he is more likely to give less minutes to Osman. 2 good games from Barkley and will get more.

Just come up with a solid plan to bring RVP in should I panic and pull the trigger on that Pre GW4:

    Amorebieta to Chester this week

Soldado and Coutinho to RVP and 5.0.

That will leave my midfield shaky, with two 5.0s, and no Soldado, who is going to do very well I think, but you can't have them all.

Trouble is I don't really want to lose any of my current strikers - Soldado, Sturridge, Benteke

Keep RVP out. He's not going to score enough to compensate for two 5m mids. There's lots of great strikers this year that having two of will out score RVP. For one RVP you have to miss out on one good midfielder and two good forwards. He's the best but he will seriously lose you points elsewhere.

You all have the same attitude I had up until I started worrying about him continuing at 2 goals a game - unlikely, but then he could run riot against the likes of Crystal palace, while still getting a goal against the likes of Chelsea etc.

Ah well, I probably won't do it, but it's nice to know I've got that option if I can't live without him.

I hope Soldado keeps delivering so I don't get tempted 😉

Altidore would run into the box when his Sund had possession

so far, with scoring down this week, glad i did ravel->barkley as my only transfer for GW2 (didnt start him). He looks secure for now, and nailed on if Fellaini leaves. went into the season with the idea of jumping on budget prospects rather than make big expensive changes. i think that's the way to go. not saying barkley is this year's michu but he could be upwards of 6.0 by Christmas. Plus i keep a piece of Toffee around as I look to dump mirallas.

I am rethinking Baines - for Coleman - the problem for Coleman was Moyes' lack of faith as a day-in day-out player. Looks like Martinez sees him as a full-time starter. Cut rate Baines.

    Elnine: Response from last page....

Rooting for Zabs tomorrow., and Dzeko of course. They and Soldado will determine what kind of GW this will be for me.

So far so good, thanks for the kind words. Definitely had some great performances from defense. Studge may be as close to a season keeper as I have, if healthy. Him and Mignolet, of course.

Why would Bale staying make you sell Lamps? just for the spot?

In my opinion, there is 0% chance Bale will play for us again. what makes you think otherwise?

If we had talked last night, would you have recommended Haz>Silva for a hit?

Dzeko has such a huge upside, I fear for him. Same here, Soldado is the man!

The Willian move must have screwed up Levy's plans to some extent considering he was Bale's replacement. If Lamela is confirmed, Bale should happen. But I'm suspecting a Modric Saga MK2 the way this is developing.

Lamps, just to free up the spot. Fixtures are worrying, though he's fixture proof.

Definitely not for a hit. Hazard is quality mate and could one of the better decisions holding on to him. You could easily do Haz > Silva this Gw if Silva does something.

      You considering this?

The willian move is gutting. Good signing for your boys though. Fair play, just sad for us.

Even if we sign no one else, I think its over. They are already talking wages, thats how over it is.

Really thinking of holding on to Lamps. Giving it some thought. He will definitely be the last chels guy I sell.

Totally considering getting Silva in for Hazard. No matter what, I think Hazard is my transfer this week.

So an alternative route to RVP. Yes his price could be 14.5m or worse by the time it applies, but it could still be viable -

We all build value in our teams. Some consciously with wildcards, free transfers and points hits; other just through owning players that score highly.
At £14m RVP is a massive proportion of our budget, and badly damages the rest of the team (a popular way of putting this seems to be RVP + 2 £5m mids *or* a £9m mid and three good strikers - or something along those lines). He is, however, the safest bet points-wise since Cristiano Ronaldo.
This also somewhat ignores fixtures. But seeing as RVP is often cited as fixture-proof, and perhaps one more for consistency than explosiveness (very few hauls last season of more than 1 goal at a time, but rarely went a week without some sort of return) that shouldn't be a big problem.

Rather than sacrificing relatively expensive players to bring in the ultimately expensive RVP now, and gambling that he outscores the boys you dropped, wait until your team value allows him to be brought in at a far smaller relative cost to your team.
Before even Christmas I'm sure there are many people here with team values north of £105m, even £106m. This is probably the tipping point where the points earned by the players dropped to bring RVP in do not exceed those scored by RVP himself (and those of the cheaper players acquired to facilitate RVP).

If pulled off, you maxmise the money you've invested in your squad both before and after the RVP purchase. And most importantly, you can watch at least half the Man United games this season from the comfort of your sofa, rather than behind it.

Who are you trading to get Coleman in?

Looks like Lukaku isnt going to do particularly well with rotation but atm I feel Sturridge and Liverpool are stuck with stronger defense and he wont score heavily like Benteke or Soldado can. Looking at GW3 ManC fixture it looks better to trade him for a city striker - Dzeko if he still looks nailed on or Aguero preferably. Coleman is looking like having an extra mid like Baines only cheaper.

Anyone thinking of loading up on Man City players GW3? Seems the obvious choice to swap the blank Che players to. Dont think it is worth a wildcard but perhaps a -4, looking like Zabs and Silva the obvious 2 to swap hazard and Ivan with.

Very tempted. But rotation up front would be a slight concern.

I already did Haz&Lukaku -> Silva&Aguero, had some spare funds. Already have Dzeko so IF the 3 of them play over the next 2 City games I should be in for a decent haul!

Would've been nicer if i didn't make such a horrible captain choice! Went with the gut, the gut must be sick.

I took the hit this week for it instead. Playing Cardiff they still have a decent chance to rack up big points.

    Morning chaps

I rarely have a City player but am attracted to a Hazard > City transfer. Are Silva, Ya Ya, Fernandihno and Navas looking like the mainstays? I'm sure tonights game will shed some more light but if you have any opinions atm that'd be great 🙂

Hopefully my grav is back up and running...

Not sure Yaya and Fernandinho will be worth the money. Navas looks dangerous, but he also looked dangerous in Spain and came away with very few what-would-be fantasy points. Silva might be the man.

Yaya certainly looks overpriced (or the others under-priced). Navas & Silva defo look like the men to choose between don't they. Game's not on until 10pm where I am but if I can find somewhere to watch it I will - and then decide from there. Thanks Sechwa.

Probably a good choice - i'll hopefully be able to give Navas the once over later just in case he looks more dangerous.

Considering fixtures for GW3&4 who to swap out for Oscar, must be 6m or less.

    Plan is depending on performaces:
    GW3 - Oscar -> 6m
    GW4 - Aguero -> RvP or Dzeko ->Benteke

    Thoughts?

Brady so far the only appealing option otherwise the not so nailed on Barklay.

Newcastle have good fixtures but are unsettled atm. Odly there so far is no must have midfielder- Nolan and Silva the best atm in the high ownership levels.
