The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Monday

Romelu Lukaku flexes his substantial Fantasy football muscles to wreck the Newcastle defence and leave us re-assessing our forward lines yet again. Meanwhile, the withdrawal of Hatem Ben Arfa and a transformed second-half showing from Newcastle has his owners hovering over the panic button.

The Game Changer

Lukaku simply ran riot in the first half with the Newcastle back four unable to cope with his pace and power. Having transformed and won the game at Upton Park from the bench, this evening, the Belgian dismantled the Magpies with a brace and an assist that put the game out of reach.

We shouldn’t be surprised by Lukaku’s impact. We saw last season that, when he is given pitch time, he can deliver, with 17 goals from just 20 league starts at West Brom. Jose Mourinho may feel that his game is not refined enough for the Chelsea squad but Lukaku has nonetheless proved to be hugely effective on the Premier League stage.

Fantasy managers now have to carefully consider their front lines. Lukaku at 7.6 and rising in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) will clearly represent outstanding value if he can replicate the strike rate shown at the Hawthorns. On tonight’s evidence, there’s every chance he can achieve that and more, putting further pressure on the three slots in our squad.

The Underused

It seems almost folly to discuss yet another option up front but we shouldn’t ignore Loic Remy’s late goal which left the Goodison nerves jangling. Three goals in three starts underline the Frenchman’s impact that, while less explosive than Lukaku’s at Everton, has been no less effective.

Available in the same FPL price bracket, Remy’s performance will likely be overlooked but, having been shifted to a central role in place of Papiss Cisse tonight, it’s clear that Remy will, quite literally, be central to their aspirations this season.

The Selection Poser

Hatem Ben Arfa’s withdrawal at half-time took everyone by surprise and yet, minutes later, his replacement Yohan Cabaye, scored from range to hand the Magpies an unlikely lifeline. Despite attempting to focus play through Ben Arfa in the first half, Alan Pardew took the decision to replace him with the more combative Cabaye for the second period and the change appeared to pep up the visitors as they came close to an unlikely comeback.

The reason behind the change is uncertain. Certainly Alan Pardew gave no indication of an injury in his post-match comments, leaving Ben Arfa’s owners frustrated at the curtailed pitch time and somewhat anxious that the mercurial winger may have fallen out of favour ahead of the Gameweek 7 trip to Cardiff. We await further noises from St James’ Park.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Must admit i'm not really liking FPL this year, seems to be bucking the trend of previous years. I mean, Yaya & Ramsey, usually they'd've stopped scoring in GW3....

      They HAVE to stop.

The best players will be the ones who drop them at the right moment.

Personally I wish I had both. But that's hindsight!

I think they will stop soon if not this week. Surely?

I'm HATING it so far. Ya just gotta keep the head down and work hard. The green arrows will come eventually. I had the exact same bad start last year and managed a half-decent 10k finish. It was a long haul though.
It's not nice playing catch up for a whole season.

      Keep calm Parm.

Your time will come. Don't bother about the rank. Keep making the right moves and you'll be inside the top 10k by the season end.

I was 1.6m in gw 8 last season and finished 12k fwiw.

So chasing points seems to be paying dividends consistently, this is the first time I've done the opposite and like many i am wondering what do i do now.

After taking an early lead in my cash MLs im getting a beating from guys that login once a week and have picked up Brady, Ramsey, Yaya etc and now i feel i need to do the same!

7 of my first 11 grabbed 1 point this GW, Barkley on the bench, Lukaku and Rooney (c) helped me out though. Got to remain positive thought, its manager of the month format and it all starts again now!

The top 3 guys in my work mini league scored 78, 72 and 74 respectively this GW.

I think WAY more people are clued in on how to play this game with a bit more savvy than say 2 or 3 years ago.

Just because "casuals" only log on once or twice a week doesn't mean they don't watch a lot of football or have a semblance on how the price changes work, etc.

Yep I agree. It doesn't take too much savvy to watch a few Arsenal games, see how well Ramsey is playing, see he's 6 mil and put him in.

      Zab.

Good for attacking points whatever fixture. Ferdinand looks rusty.

Regretting starting HBA over Barkley 🙁 Not feeling too good about having both Baines and Coleman either.

IMO you can't be spending so much on Baines and Vidic. Especially if it means you are fielding two budget(ish) midfielders.

I'd downgrade one of those two defenders and strengthen the mids.

There are plenty if better options than Vidic

......even though I have him myself!!
