The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

A goalscoring legend rolls back the years to put in a match winning shift that pockets him a double figure Fantasy haul. Elsewhere, West Ham’s resilience is on show to tempt our belated investment, while down at the Lane, Tottenham’s midfield personnel remain in flux as another popular target finds himself on the timber.

The Game Changer

In a season seemingly crowded by prolific, stand-out options in attack, it’s perhaps ironic that Fernando Torres should, at last, show a glimmer of former glories.

Today’s goal and assist returns in the dramatic win over City saw Torres deliver on the promise he had previously shown in recent matches. More significantly, his performance seemed to demonstrate a new hunger and confidence coursing through his veins as, time and time again, he took it upon himself to stretch the City backline with positive movement and surges between defenders. All this following a glaring miss that typified his previous displays at the Bridge.

It would be premature and foolish to announce that Torres is back but, having impressed in matches at Spurs and in the Champions League, the former Liverpool striker is beginning to chain together convincing performances. Today he capped it with Fantasy returns – a double figure haul no less.

As Chelsea’s expensive midfield options – Oscar and Eden Hazard – drew a blank, Torres is perhaps unlucky to find our forward lines so fully booked by other in-from options. It seems unlikely that Fantasy attention will come his way in the current landscape, but there’s little doubt that Torres’ form at least warrants our attention and recognition.

The Underused

Despite earning a fifth clean sheet of the season at the Liberty stadium today, West Ham’s defence remains largely ignored by Fantasy managers.

With under 6% ownership, keeper Jussi Jääskeläinen is the most popular member of Sam Allardyce’s resolute rearguard. While his 5.5 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag is perhaps an obstacle given the value offered by Southampton’s Artur Boruc, in front of him we have a cast to choose from across the price brackets.

Winston Reid is perhaps the jewel in the crown – a dominant centre-back of some standing, he already has a league goal to his name and top scores for Bonus Point System (BPS) points with 52. Below him, we find James Tomkins, a relatively new option having earned a recall in place of former favourte James Collins. Priced at 4.7, Tomkins arguably has a greater goal threat than Reid and is just as capable of earning bonus points given his aerial presence.

At the lower end of the scale, Razvan Rat now looks assured of starts as Joey O’Brien and Guy Demel battle for the right-back role. The Romanian is installed on the left and offers a route to Big Sam’s defence for just 4.5. He’s now started the last five and looks set to earn significant interest following today’s returns given the Hammers forthcoming schedule.

The Selection Poser

The Spurs midfield continues to cause concern for Fantasy managers, with Andre Villas-Boas today introducing Aaron Lennon into the mix. Having dropped Christian Eriksen to the bench at Villa last weekend, today it was the turn of Gylfi Sigurdsson to make way as Lennon took up the left flank role.

With Eriksen benched again, only seeing action with thirty minutes remaining, it’s rapidly becoming clear that our options in Tottenham’s engine room are limited to Paulinho and the emerging Andros Townsend. Both saw 90 minutes in the win over the Tigers, although Townsend was fortunate to end the match having been knocked unconscious after falling into the White Hart Lane crowd.

With Eriksen’s ownership plummeting following his recent relegation, it now looks set to be Sigurdsson’s turn to suffer losses – the Icelandic international is owned by almost 10% of FPL managers, having enjoyed a spurt of investment following a 16-point haul in Gameweek 4.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Watch Michu explode in the derby.

I'm licking my lips. He aint going anywhere. I'll take the £0.1 loss and all those getting rid. He'll become a diff with 9 solid fixtures.

    Blind Kneejerk in my opinion.

Look at the bandwagon last year to get him in, has he become that crap overnight or something?

Its so predictable this. I hope people get rid, I really do.

Lots going to be disappointed and probably looking to get him back in in the near future. Swansea have brilliant fixtures.

Also, as it stands, (VC) vs. Cardiff.

Its only cus I've got van Persie. But If I didnt, Michu for me next GW. I reckon Aguero and Suarez are the other big options next gameweek to.

Someone posted earlier that he's only managed 7 goals all year (calendar year that is). Not great returns tbh. Last chance saloon next week.

Hmm, you might well be proved right in the derby, but I'm not sure if getting rid after 2,2,3,3 in last four games at his price point is 'blind kneejerk', and was particularly galling he got no attacking returns in the recent 4-0!

I'm wildcarding as I need Suarez and aguero to stand a chance, Soldado and lambert aren't up to much and I feel ozil is a waste for the next few fixtures. Any ideas or improvements would help, I know I have lost a lot of value due to stupid loyalty of players.

you could do benteke to lukaku and mutch to brady , although i do like bentekkers more , thats option 1 ... honestly i dont care for nastasic you ca do him to rat and if u dont want double up on hull bench fodder , baker from villa is available for 3.9 option 2

and option 3 you can go for kasami at 4.5 instead of mutch

I agree on baker, villa have some good fixtures. Im dropping lukaku I think bentekkers will score more and has the pen duties even if he did miss this weekend. my thinking behind nas is a cheap route into maybe some city clean sheets from the next few fixtures. mutch is 4.4 why I have him over kasami. Thanks for the input!

I almost did Rat and then Tomkins, but the attacking threat and bonus points of Williams are too good to resist.

It's late, i already lost value on Vidic last night because I wanted to make sure no injuries. Neither of those players are playing in the COC, so I'll just have to hope nothing else crops up.

Out: Giroud, if you have Ozil or Ramsey.

I'm keeping Michu another week or two despite the drop.

Townsend is a no no for me. Everyone I see him play he just takes aimless shots instead of finding his mates in better positions

When the hype doses down. I am sure he will be benched

Right, having now dropped 70 points behind my league’s leader with his 3 Southampton players, these are tough times and having forked out £50 to enter the league, this bothers me greatly. At this time I turn to you all for help.

My team is: Migs; Vertonghen, Baines, Ivanovic, Coleman, (Clyne); Michu, Ramsey, (Brady, Amalfitano, Januzaj); Giroud, Sturridge, Lukaku.

My midfield is dire, but then there aren’t many midfielders who really excite me. All of my attackers scored this week but I’ve been hammered as most of my league rivals have Suarez as captain.

I have 1FT and 6 million to spend - My original plan was to do Januzaj to Silva. But I’m tempted to swap Giroud for Aguero or Suarez instead. Having said that at this point I’m open to any ideas...

    Cheers!

I would do both Giroud and Lukaku for Aguero and Suarez for a hit. Captain the right one, and make up that ground in no time

That was one of the many changes I was tinkering with! I just think Lukaku is amazing value and if Everton score you feel he'll be involved. I also worry that Aguero will be rotated occasionally - but then he is capable of getting big points. Captain choice has not been my strength this season - Baines when he got 0 points was a particular low point!

You have a great team and with 6mil to spare u shd definitely get in silva/oscar

One thing u might consider is to downgrade either Baines or Coleman to williams/4mil def as with a def like yours it's hard to pick 4 every week as I would want all to play

Then u can see if u can upgrade one of ur striker to Saurez and the same time janu to silva

That will be a fearful team

Cheers mate - I invariably drop Coleman when he does get any points so wouldn't be much of a loss! Just taking a points hit when all of my strikers scored is difficult!

Yeah I know and I have been waiting for the day Arsenal screw me over. The issue is I bought ozil and 10, Giroud 8.5 and Ramsey at 6.7 so if I transfer any of them out I can't afford to get them back.
