Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 11

Our final glance at the Gameweek gone by hails the consistency of Southampton’s captain after another stand-out display. We also highlight Newcastle’s recent resolve and wonder whether a certain Uruguayan is the one premium forward we simply cannot afford to be without:

The Player

A brilliant solo goal against Hull continued Adam Lallana’s stunning start to the season. With an assist and a couple of bonus points also accrued against the Tigers, the Southampton skipper delivered his third set of double figures in the last five Gameweeks – elevating him to third in the midfielder standings, behind Aaron Ramsey and Yaya Toure, on 61 points.

Having drawn blanks in each of the first four fixtures, Lallana was far from Fantasy radars as we focussed on Mauricio Pochettino’s resolute defence as a source of points instead. The subsequent matches, however, have seen Lallana strike an impressive consistency with attacking returns in five of the Saints last seven – including goals at home to Swansea and away to United.

Indeed, the Gameweek 8 Old Trafford match could be key when assessing his potential. Certainly, his last-gasp equaliser sparked the bandwagon into life – prior to that match he was priced at 6.1 but has now risen to 6.8, with over 57,000 new owners already this week; far and away more than any other midfield option.

In a season where consistency has been a real rarity amongst midfield options, Lallana’s ability to produce looks crucial for Fantasy managers and Pochettino alike. As Southampton gear up for a run of matches against Arsenal, Chelsea, City and Spurs in the next six, their defensive potential may well be set to take a short-term dip but Lallana’s 10-point haul at the home of the champions indicates he’s certainly capable of delivering against the odds.

The Team

Having struggled in the opening few games, Alan Pardew’s side enter the international break on the back of successive wins over Chelsea and Tottenham. Granted, Tim Krul’s heroics at the Lane bordered on the superhuman and there’s no doubt the visitors were more than a little fortunate, but the Magpies did also keep out Jose Mourinho’s side with a resilient Gameweek 10 performance at St James’ Park, which harvested a 2-0 triumph.

Prior to the Blues match, Pardew’s side looked poor defensively and had conceded in their previous six but a move to 4-4-2 seems to have instilled a little more steel to the Newcastle set-up. With Loic Remy moved from the left of a 4-3-3 into a central position alongside Shola Ameobi, Pardew’s bold decision to drop fan favourites Hatem Ben Arfa and Papiss Cisse has proven a masterstroke, with the work-rate of French pair Moussa Sissoko and Yoan Gouffran out wide keeping compatriot Ben Arfa on the bench.

Both Mike Williamson and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa have started the last two in central defence and come in at 4.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), though with Mathieu Debuchy suspended for the next league match, fit-again Fabricio Coloccini may return to the centre. That would see Yanga-Mbiwa shifted to right-back to cover for Debuchy, or left-back with Davide Santon switching flanks. It remains to be seen how Pardew approaches his centre-back pairing from there on in.

In addition to the new-found resilience, there are options on offer further up the pitch. Remy’s winner at the Lane taking his tally to seven for the season; with an assist also accrued, he’s played a part in eight of his side’s 15 goals and sits on 58 FPL points, just five behind Olivier Giroud in the forward standings. Yohan Cabaye also gives us an option in midfield, with a goal or assist in four of the last seven Gameweeks. As Pardew’s charges prepare for back-to-back home games with Norwich and West Brom, the duo – at 7.7 and 6.3 – have already picked up plenty new investors already this week as Fantasy managers look for a route into the resurgent Tyneside team.

The Talking Point

In a week where Arsenal and City – the league’s top scoring sides – failed to find the net, Luis Suarez surged up the Fantasy standings with yet another sublime display. Six games back from suspension and the Liverpool talisman is already joint-fourth in the FPL forward standings, serving up four sets of double figures in a series of incredible displays that have seen him average 10.7 points per game.

While Daniel Sturridge had initially kept pace upon his team-mate’s return to the fold, the England striker has offered little evidence of the Uruguayan’s explosive capacity for points. Sturridge may have scored in eight of his 11 appearances but he has managed double figures just once – Suarez, meanwhile, has delivered captaincy hauls of 26, 20, 34 and 32 points, helping save many a Gameweek and more than justifying the extra outlay at 11.9 to Sturridge’s 9.8.

Liverpool’s fixtures may continue to look promising but those Sturridge owners who have remained loyal due to his consistency have been punished severely in recent matches. With Hull, Norwich and West Ham in the next four, it’s no coincidence that Sturridge in the most sold frontman this week, while his strike-partner has received more transfers in than any other forward.

The captaincy issue may have dented Sturridge’s prospects but he’s not the only one to suffer in Suarez’ shadow. United duo Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie have risen up the rankings in recent weeks with some steady returns but, in terms of captaincy potential, have served up double figures only twice and three times in 10 appearances respectively.

Only Sergio Aguero has mirrored Suarez’ total of four but the City forward has played 10 times to the Liverpool forward’s six; his blank at Sunderland was the third time the Argentine has failed to produce points – perhaps no coincidence that on two of those occasions, David Silva has been missing from the XI. Indeed, with Silva likely to miss out again ahead of back-to-back home games with Spurs and Swansea, Aguero’s chances of more explosive returns may be a little less enticing.

Suarez may have a Goodison encounter with Everton up next but given his current form, the Toffees will do well to keep him at bay in the first Merseyside derby of the season. The only slight caveat could be fatigue, with Suarez set to return from his World Cup play-off with Uruguay against Jordan, a little over 48-hours prior to the Premier League outing.

Currently sitting in 27% of FPL teams, Suarez is now the highest owned of any premium-priced forward and despite the return to form of United’s duo and Aguero’s strike rate under Manuel Pellegrini, Suarez has quickly shown that, more than any frontman this season, he has the consistency to make or break a Gameweek – going without him over the next few fixtures may be an oversight many a Fantasy campaign could struggle to recover from.

I did my captain analysis yesterday...

      So, who are you captaining?

I am thinking Ozil, it's a big differential, but not 'mad'

Whereas Aguero is vs Tottenham who have only conceded 1 away this season, so I cannot see man city getting more than 2...

      Ark!

Yeah, they are fantastic players unfortunately, and it's all subjective. Ronaldo is more OK, guess my mate has just sunk me one too many times in FIFA with him. Zlatan just seems like a total douche and still everyone adores him. I bet the newspapers here would put some random Zlatan comment on the weather in Paris or something on the front pages ahead of just about anything else, be it the CL-final or the beginning of the apocalypse. Can't stand it.

seriously is Aguero really essential... I see suarez as the only real essential player, maybe like this

        ESSENTIAL

        Suarez

        ONE OF THESE

        RVP,Rooney,Aguero

        AND ONE OF THESE

        Giroud,Benteke,Lukaku,Lambert,Remy, Sturridge, Saldado, Negredo

Really they are pretty well priced this year.

The way it's going with mids underperforming, there's an argument to say it should be 'two of these' for the second group (since there's no reason not to spend a lot up front). Though I suppose some of the third group could certainly come into contention with a run of good form...player value isn't everything.

ye I can agree with that, was more saying talking of Aguero being essential is maybe not the case, especially with his fixtures. Im currently on Suarez and Rooney... thinking of Lukaku to Giroud maybe for or after SOU.

Obviously if you don't have Aguero now it's quite easy to justify ignoring him due to missing some big GW scores and his price rises. But you KNOW he's gonna get another monster points haul. When City are up for it, Aguero's involved in everything. I personally think he and Suarez are the must haves this season, with probably Remy the other choice due to his value and recent form. The others seem to disappoint more often than not

He played with pain killers last matches, he will skip the national team to give his injury time to rest so he can continue without the pain killers after the break.

Anyone else on here consider themselves to be a 'semi-casual'?

I don't post on here often apart from the odd questions for advice on transfers or captain choice but the 'lurkers' thread from a few weeks back made me think about my own FF status/identity.

I suspect a lot of visitors to the site, outside of the regular posters, are like me in that they consider themselves to be 'semi-casual'. That is, we are interested enough to want to win our mini league but nowhere near committed or informed enough to get a decent rank or compete with the regular posters on here. I suppose the very fact that we have sought out sources of information like this site shows that we are looking for some kind of competitive edge.

I'm interested to hear from people who consider themselves semi-casual - more informed than their mates or colleagues in their mini-leagues but, for whatever reason, not up there with those who consistently achieve a good rank. What do you think is the gap between casual and semi-casual and between semi-casual and serious player? What stops you achieving a higher rank? How do you use the site and do you think it gives you an edge over your ML rivals? Why can't you convert that into a better all-round general rank? Do you sometimes try and be too clever with your decisions based on things you hear on this site.

I'm in my 4th year playing FPL now (so really should be better than I actually am) and have had a mixed performance...

Year 1 (different account - ha, heard that one before!) - Didn't even note my overall rank but smashed my ML, which was enough for me. Found this site early in the season, which helped a lot.

Year 2 - Again, smashed my ML and ended up top 25k overall. Had no idea (and still don't) if this was good or bad. Fully expected to win my ML the following year but...

Year 3 - Ah, my difficult 3rd season! This was the year I decided to try and take things a little more seriously. Spent more time on this, and other, FF sites. Learnt about building team value, rotating pairs, triples etc etc. So much advice flying around the web that by the deadline my head was in a spin. Came 3rd in my ML and top 150k overall. By all accounts a backward step. Took loads of points hits, always seemed to have the wrong captain, kept players too long or ditched them too early.

This year - This is looking like being my worse season yet. Have taken a monumental amount of hits, simply because I always feel like I'm 4 or 5 transfers away from where I need to be and have been hammered by not having Suarez or Aguero at the right time. Also, I'm maybe obsessing about value too much and therefore taking hits to catch the rise and miss the falls. My girlfriend is perplexed as to why I am so crap as I spend so much time staring at my team considering transfers! Am currently near the bottom of my ML.

So... I guess what I'm saying is that I suspect there are a lot of other players who, like me, understand all the concepts and have access to all the information and advice but simply cannot get out of semi-casual status. I think for me it is a case of over-thinking things and trying to be too clever (coupled with being impatient and impulsive). Other things may hold us semi-casuals back and I'm interested to hear what they are. I do believe the standard in my mini-league has improved dramatically as well.

For the record, I'm not confusing lurkers with semi-casuals. I'm sure there are some lurking ninjas out there who absorb all the info and then put it to deadly use.

Nah, I consider myself a semi-serious player of the game..
I use the site a fair bit, mostly for news and for something to do... but I don't weigh up every move as means to boost my overall rank.
I just use fantasy football as a means of increasing my enjoyment of the real sport.
I get in players I'm going to watch over the weekend and if they don't do well, what harm.
It's just a game, but it's fun and I treat it as such.

If you're on here during the international break you can no longer consider yourself semi-casual.
            You are addicted.

I would suggest your first season approach would fair better this season.
I would advice you filter who you consider for advice. Spend done of that time analysing the regular advisors and how their advice turns out. Not everyone who puts a lot of facts and figures along side their advice means they know what they are doing, and there are a few who say little but have clearly thought it through well.
If all else fails gut instinct is usually good, that way your success or mistakes taken from others advice won't influence your future decisions. As in if you have a bad result based on going with scouts advice you can easily ignore good advice in future as a result

To be fair, I enjoyed the game a lot more before I started thinking about price rises and falls. Or maybe I'm a stone cold genius and I'm going to rip it up with my massive budget post-January wildcard.

                  Doubt it though.

Good post..I'm semi casual in approach but i know plenty of stats and such like and am obsessive about footy in general..Last year I had all the Belgians for the entire season and this year I'm experimenting with only buying players who have fallen in value (mainly)..I just love playing the game, where it takes me in Gw rank is just a by product...

I guess i fall into this bracket. I spend a lot of time reading on here and very little posting. Average player of the game (inside top 300k all 3 seasons) i dont have the patience that i believe is required to get into the very top bracket of this game. I knee jerk too many times and take many points hits.

                Nice post 🙂

I had a little family league last year with my sons with fresh teams...we started at Christmas, the rules were two hits a week each (three transfers) no more and no less...It's an excellent way to play the game.

Im not a big lover over too many stats tbh , I think its the downfall of many as they become obsessed with stats.

I watch as much football as i can and my knowledge is good and with that i base my picks mainly on gut instinct but i also look at previous season for goals and assists etc.

                    Good post.

I would classify myself a semi-casual. I like the idea of using all the stats, but in reality I just go with my gut and listen to advice on here far too readily!

Reason for not doing as well as I should is not getting on the bandwagons quick enough and poor captain choices. Both probably down to not analysing the stats enough.

I'm on here a lot because of my mod duties. Honest. Nothing to do with being addicted or anything!

This is my 2nd season. Last season my ML was my only concern. But this year after finding this site, i care more about my overall rank but still ML is my priority.

Even last year before buying any player i used to go to wikipedia and look at his basic stats. But now i don't buy any player unless i am convinced by his stats, fixtures, imp.* people's views about him here and a little bit of gut feeling.

*I have a list of people here who talk sense and i think of them as reliable.

I cant call myself casual(may be my rank suggests otherwise) because of the time i spend here/searching for stats/read or visit anything FPL related, all the tables i make and how i cant get FPL outta my head. I already have like 7-8 tables for my WWC team and thats only for def. I almost quit my job because they switched my shift to evening. I am an ex-MMORPG player so i am used to of being addicted to a game.

I consider myself as a semi casual..
1)I think that the is no big gap on us being Casuals and serious players. It's like being street smart and book smart at the same time.
                    2) What really stops me from having a good rank is maybe over thinking things and not getting right players at the right time I've been punished by jumpin on HBA after his points haul and not considering Rambo early.
                    3) I use this site by reading all the articles, hot topics, comments and it gave me an edge on my ML rival.
                    4) Overthinking, Reacting fast and/or slow.
5)I try to be clever with Amalfitanao and still waiting..

I'm on my 4th year as well but this is my first focused year.
My 1st year I just saw the game and just entered like nothing.
2nd year i found some peeps and joined in but like nothing as well.
3rd year entered again and came back GW16 in my H2H i was rock bottom of the table. felt really bad about it so I searched sites to help and espn scout came calling and helped me boost to 10th plus beating the no.1 on h2h by just a point then promised myself to win my ML the next year. Then espn site gave some tips on where to improve and guide for the upcoming season and suggested FFS.
Now on my 4th had the highest of 22k & lowest of 300+k overall and 20pts on top of my ML for 11GWs It feels great to find this site!

Cheers on the hot topic! 🙂

Interesting topic. I'd break it up into 4 categories. Firstly there are two halfs, the casual and the serious FPL player.

The Casuals: The casuals do not use sites such as FFS and don't do any research beyond the FPL pages.

The Serious FPL player: These people use sites such as TotalFPL and FFS

Of course there are varying degrees of success in each category as there will be plenty of onto it casuals who only need to look at the FPL pages in order to be successful (I was one of these once and finished in the top 50k for my first 3 seasons). As you have illustrated also there are plenty of serious FPL players that have modest histories and never really seem to crack the higher ranks. All in all I still think there are only really two categories with varying levels of success in each one.

I am a serious-casual player - being very serious of this game but not involve in money league.

I had better success earlier when I got into top 200 worldwide for 3 times in the first 4 seasons. During that period, there was no website like this. I generated my own excel spreadsheets, analyse the fixture ease of each team in 6-GW basis. I will write down all potential buy-in players in team basis in the spreasheet so give me a better idea of how to manage the fixture ease. I always compare the value among players to judge which GK and defenders are worth to get (e.g. never buy a GK when the defenders from the same team are cheaper, and vice versa). I think the vision of fixture ease, the effectiveness of squad rotation, and better budget management earn me pretty successful fantasy career that time. Then I also watched a lot of matches on TV myself, which have substituted the power of statistics, so I can always buy in those fantasy-under-performed players before everyone else. My success in fantasy finally attracted one of the best-selling newspaper interviewed me, and my stories covered 2 pages the other day!

However, after the introduction of fantasy websites (FISO, FFS, TOTALPFL, etc.), I can see many of you improve dramatically in recent seasons. Information become very handy and I find myself lacking some edges. My overall rank dropped to 792, then 108237! then claw back to 2744 in the previous 3 seasons. It becomes harder and harder to get back to my early success when these websites help out many people around. I still have my own spreadsheet, such that I can plan something particular for my own team. I even watch more soccer now, so I can judge players better than the stat showed on paper. But I can never watch all 10 matches in weekly basis, so I need to rely on stats for those that I haven't watched, then my judgement will be similar to all of you.

I think the final edge I have in fantasy is when I can watch more soccer matches myself, coz statistics has its own bais. During the year I ranked at 108237, I only watched one match per month. In all other seasons, I watch several matches every week!

Finally, I am nor just addicted to fantasy. I love watching soccer a lot. As a soccer team manager (I mean a real team), I love seeing not just my beloved Liverpool but also lesser teams, coz I need to learn from different managers that how they approach each match, how they tinker their squad, how they adjust their tactics, and how they make each substitution. They are all my good teachers, not matter it's SAF or Di Canio, when you can learn from their success or mistakes.

Impressive! Julian Hancock might have achieved better rankings in his first two seasons, but I would be surprised if anyone can match your first four.

Thanks for your compliment. Thanks FFS having the Hall of Fame, to put me at 19th by the end of 12/13. I don't know where I am atm coz I am not a paid member, but such ranking is a good indicator (and compliments) for players performing consistently.

The 18 players above me are those I really want to beat, coz beating anyone in a single season could be down to luck, but beating others by a series of 7 seasons should be a real deal.

I don't think how much you comment on these sections makes a difference.
Of course there's varying levels of looking into stats but if you read most of the articles here and are an occasional 'lurker' surely you will get 90% of the information that anyone else has, if only a day later.
Maybe that 10% makes the extra difference, I wouldn't know! 🙂

I propose a thread of general tips... I will start:

Pay close attention to your opponents mini-league team, the panel on the bottom right reports his current team value, cash and transfer this week - by monitoring daily price movements you can predict his transfer most weeks before the deadline. Use this to your advantage.

                  Please sticky me.

I dont see why his team has any effect on my score, look after your own team, to hell with everyone elses.

If you are prepared for Season 1 and 2 to start slowly, everything after that is some of the best TV ever produced.

                              Aside from Breaking Bad, perhaps.

I think GoT is better than Breaking Bad.
Thought the last 2 seasons were a bit underwhelming after the first 3.
The acting was exceptional to be fair.

I have read the GoT books though, so the show was always going to be a slight disappointment. Although I admit, they did do a great job - but books are always better 😉

I guess you start on Jan 1st and it's compulsory to make 3 transfers per week (-8 hit).

He said it was a great way to play the game - I'm wondering if he meant it actually ended up earning him good points ie. is a valid way to play all the time, or just meant it was a fun thing to do

                                    Current team:

                                    Boruc, Lewis

                                    Dawson, Johnson, Coleman, Clyne, Wilson

                                    Silva, Oscar, Ozil, Barkley, Ravel

                                    Rooney, Suarez, Lukaku

I have 2 FT and 0 in the bank. Currently Look st Lukaku and Silva --> Aguero and any 5.1< MFer. Can anyone see any better moves for me to make for the coming weeks? Thanks.
