Fantasy Football Scout Cup VIII – Third Round Draw

With little time for turnaround between Gameweeks, we roll out the Round 2 results and Round 3 Draw of the Fantasy Football Scout Cup VII, sponsored by Paddy Power, this evening. Before we look at the remaining contenders for the crown, those taking part should note that these ties take place over Gameweek 15 – the Gameweek 14 midweek matches do not count towards your tally:

Our defending champion Wild Rover seems to have risen to the occasion and, having climbed the rankings in the last couple of weeks, now faces Hillbillypete for a place in the Fourth Round. Wild Rover is one of only three previous Scout Cup winners still remaining; GoonerDave goes up against Mufcste55 – the latter is the favourite here, sitting just outside the top 10,000 – whilst sleepingmaster pits his wits against bigfourleggedbeast.

Mark’s podcast co-host and Champions League tipster Granville swept aside Dullardinho last weekend and now faces The Upper Deckers, who sits just inside the top 1 million. Gaz Downright – who tops the Contributors and Moderators league – is up against 2ndMan, whilst fellow moderators applebonkers and Ryan have been drawn against ste2510 and Bedknobs and Boomsticks respectively.

Amongst the community members still in with a shout, Tommy Tynan’s Left Shin Pad takes on Jafooli, The Sarjeant faces Isacki, EpicFAIL has been drawn against The Shadow and Daniel plays host to The Flying Nugget.

Giuliop11 may well be considered the favourite for the title. Sitting in 164th spot overall, he’s the man to avoid – Ferenc55 stands in his way of a Fourth Round spot.

As usual, we name-check the highest scoring winner from the previous round. Realunitedfc takes the honour, after racking up 90 points in Gameweek 13 – now up to around the 17,000-mark, he swaggers into the next fixture against bcdahm.

If you fancy a glance back at the Round 2 results, click here or if you are awaiting the fixture list for the next batch of head-to-head, the draw for the Third Round is available here.

As always, good luck to those still in with a shout of the silverware.

A couple of colder days this weekend - no sign of anything likely to disrupt Premier games. Remember: newspapers make up stories to get sales, they don't report facts. Unless the Met Offiice (or me!) say on their website that it's going to be bad, ignore the tabloids.

Evening gents, I've written a detailed post about the overall average.

    Some insights:
    • actual overall average is always slightly higher than the one we see
    • in GW13, top 5% of FPL teams as of the start of the week scored approximately 58.2 points on average; top 5% of FPL teams as of the end of the week scored on average 63.3 points
    • average is higher for the teams up top and it is smoothly getting lower as we go down the rankings (well, big surprise! 🙂 ); but there is a hike at the bottom of the overall table which reflects recently created teams.

There are also some cool graphs and other insights there 🙂 Link: http://wp.me/p47iV9-5C

Nicely done. As part of your research, do you know how many teams are truly being managed? i.e. transfers being made most weeks?

Well, this week only roughly 1/3 of all the teams made any transfers. Some people saved their transfers on purpose, so I'd say that at least 50% of teams are active.

        No GW transfers made (estimates):
        GW11: 63.2% of all teams
        GW12: 64.4% of all teams
        GW13: 65.2% of all teams

Great stuff as always, Smarty Pants.

It would be more interesting to see how many players have not made any transfers in the last 5 gameweeks, say. This would be a better indicator of how many dead teams there are still in the upper echelons of the overall rankings, as it would root out those players who simply saved a transfer for the following week.

I have a sneaky suspicion that your conclusion is wrong - the average at the top of the pile isn't higher because there are better managers at the top (although there must be an element of that), I think it's simply because the players at the top happen to have the right players at the right time, regardless of whether they are good managers, casuals or even ghost teams.

It always amazes me how many ghost teams linger around the upper reaches of the rankings long into the season, I think there is far more luck involved in this game than most people on here give credit to.

        Thanks for feedback.

I agree that to count dead teams I should look at recent transfers for several weeks. I guess the number of dead teams and their distribution over the overall league could be the topic of the next research article 🙂

Well, I didn't really go into the definition of a 'good manager'. But diligence is definitely a factor. Look at the latest 'Results Post', for example. Top 10K teams have 11.9 players who played positive minutes this week compared to 11.3 for an average team; 100% of captains compared to 95.7%; only 0.3% of vice-captains compared to 18.9%. There should be more and more dead teams with non-playing players as we go down the overall table. Ownerships of 'template' players are also getting higher up-top. I think all of this definitely plays some role.

    Which of these looks better?

    A. Chico -> Gabbidon this gameweek. Remy -> Rooney next gameweek.

    B. Chico -> Gabbidon & Remy -> Rooney, next week. No hit.

    C. Chico -> Gabbidon & Remy -> Rooney, this week. 4 point hit.

repost for those of us with the boruc to another cheapie problem,
out of the next 10 matches:
myhill: 5 home games (1 vs bottom half side), 4/10 games overall vs bottom half sides, 2/10 v top 5
marshall: 4 home games (3 vs bottom half side), 5/10 games overall vs bottom half sides, 4/10 v top 5
speroni: 6 home games (4 vs bottom half side), 5/10 games overall vs bottom sides. 2/10 v top 5

(note hull are not a bottom half team)

      form last 5:
      myhill: LWDDL
      marshall: DWLDL
      speroni: LLDWL

so speroni looks best for fixtures on paper, all have had mixed form of late.........

After the disappointment of yesterday’s scoring, now is the time to think what to do this gw.
I really must upgrade my midfield so I’ll have to downgrade somewhere in def.

    What should I do?

    A) O’Shea to a cheapie def (maybe Gabbidon or other Palace) to save some 0.8
B ) Ivanovic/Evra to a cheapie def to save some 2.4 – but Chelsea and Man U have great fixtures…
    C) Ivanovic/Evra to a 5-5.5 def (Cahill/Evans/Distin/Koscielny/Dawson…) to save some 0.8-1.3
    D) Arnautovic (injured) to ??? Only 0.1 itb and I can’t see any good mid for up to 5.6
    E) Arnautovic + Ivan / Evra (for a hit) would left me with a max of 12.0 itb, so is there any mid up to 8.0 worthwhile the hit (Lampard/Cabaye/Fer)???

Cheers for your thoughts, any help appreciated!

    Aguero --> Rooney

    Pros:

Rooney nailed on (Aguero potentially a rotation risk)
Rooney fixtures are better than Aguero
Rooney performs well at home & away (Aguero & City seemingly dependent upon the Etihad, which they play Arsenal and Liverpool at in the next 5 and the other fixtures are away)
    Rooney form better than Aguero's?
    Cheaper than Aguero

    Cons:

Rooney 4 yc (but I think he is being ultra careful... Moyes will have emphasized how important he is whilst RVP is out)

So why shouldn't I get Rooney?

Frontline of: Negredo/Rooney/Suarez is surely alright?

        Negredo - Suarez - Rooney

If you went Cout > Nasri could you do Negredo > Aguero?

Negredo will have all the same cons you listed above. It looks good if those expensive mids can produce.

Think how bad you will feel when City gain their away form and Aguero goes insane against West Brom.

Comepletey makes sense, on paper its perfect. You have to think that City's away form will come good eventually but thats the risk you take.

Where's that poster Gopher from last year?

Remembered him when taking my 8point hit.

The guy took triple the amount of transfers as everyone else and still came top 1k.

I have Aguerro and Suarez, and want to add either Negredo (for Giroud) or Nasri (for Oscar).

So which is best, Negredo or Nasri? Thanks

You have to keep Giroud for Hull at home, Davies is out for Hull aswel. 5-0 i reckon

I would personally hold on to both. Small chance Oscar gets rotated but I don't see Nasri or Negredo doing better then Giroud and Oscar these next couple of weeks.
