Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Siesta

When the team sheets arrived for City’s home clash against Palace on Saturday afternoon, a certain little Spaniard’s Fantasy owners were full of optimism for the 90 minutes ahead. By the final whistle, though, those same folk were left cursing their misfortune as David Silva handed them the most unwanted of Christmas cards – a fifth caution of the season which rules him out of Wednesday’s trip to Swansea.

Silva not only seems to have stepped up in consistency under Manuel Pellegrini (a goal or assist in eight of 11 appearances), he has also developed a penchant for picking up yellows. Over his previous three seasons with the Etihad club, the playmaker had received a total of four bookings in the league – he’s managed to mirror that already this term and with a caution accrued in the Capital One Cup, he’ll be tucking into his New Year’s Day dinner while Pellegrini’s side make their way to the Liberty.

Also sidelined through suspension are a couple of defenders – Villa’s Ciaran Clark and Chelsea’s David Luiz. Clark will miss a crucial trip to Sunderland, whilst Luiz, in just his eighth league start, picked up a fifth caution of the season in yesterday’s home win over Liverpool and will sit out the trip to Southampton.

The trio joined Sunderland’s Wes Brown on the banned list – the Black Cats centre-half serves the last of a three-match ban and will be available for the FA Cup clash against Carlisle at the weekend.

After Wednesday, the Tightrope extends to 10 bookings, with the new deadline Sunday April 13 (Gameweek 34). A special mention goes to Newcastle’s right-back Mathieu Debuchy – with seven cautions to his name, the Frenchman is just three yellows away from suspension already.

      1. Cant see Sherwood being as cavalier as the last few games so NO
      2. Good option assuming he gets the game time.
      3. Good option but Hooper is kocking them in at the moment.

Im more tempted by 2 but 1 could be OK.

    The Injury Watchlist

Right, basically, I like to make a list of potential players who are below their initial/peak value who are definitely worth a shout when they finally, or just have, return(ed) (especially around WC time). This time, I thought I'd share the list just for those who are looking at potential "differentials" at the moment.

    1) Steven Gerrard (£8.7 million)

Self explanatory really - he makes Liverpool tick. Mostly known for his set piece assists coupled with his penalty kicks, he's definitely a strong one in midfield and someone I'll look at drafting in as soon as he is back to playing full 90 minute games.

    2) Jose Enrique (£5.6 million)

Remember him? One of the best left backs in the league (in my opinion), will help Liverpool (finally) keep some clean sheets - and we all know he loves to raid that left flank and drop balls into the box. Another price drop or two would definitely help increase his appeal, although very unlikely.

    3) Matija Nastasic (£5.1 million)

One of my favourite fantasy players since the back end of last season. Seems to be first choice alongside Kompany when he's available, and claimed a clean sheet on his return.

    4) Daniel Sturridge (£9.1 million)

Love him or hate him, he was amazing before injury and I think he's worth having up front alongside the essential Suarez. 9 goals 2 assists in the first 12 GWs means he still remains joint fourth in the league's top goal scorers, despite missing the past 7 GWs. SAS may need a reunion in our attacks.

    5) Christian Benteke (£8.7 million)

Alright, so some of you may want to crucify me for including him, and he definitely burnt me on his previous return (gave him captaincy 3 GWs running for blanks) but the guy has talent, mainly features in dead teams at the moment and when he gets back to goal scoring form - he'll start ripping teams apart again just like his first 3 gameweeks showed. May be worth some investment when he finally gets back into shape.

    6) Robin van Persie (£13.6 million)

Ok, this was a brave inclusion by myself, but it's hard to say he won't be key to United's recovery when he comes back. He'll be back on his set pieces and penalties when he finally returns. Even before injury, he had offensive returns in 6 of 10 games he started (featured in 11), including 3 double figure returns. Yes, he may be pricey, but if you're looking for someone who can lift your rankings, it's definitely this guy. That is, of course, if you can afford the price tag and David Moyes lets us know sometime soon what's actually going on with his injury...

So, that's just a short list of some candidates to look at when considering your WC (or even afterwards) if they're finally back in the squads. Note: this isn't EVERYONE, it's just those I've personally shortlisted.

    How to use my FT?

    Mignolet
    Mertesacker / Bardsley / Ward / Clyne
    Hazard / Walcott / R.Morrison
    Suarez / Rooney / Lukaku

    Bench: Jagielka, Silva, J. Williams
    0.3 in the bank.

    A) Jagielka -> Koscielny (do the Arsenal double-up)
    B) Jagielka -> Gabbidon/Parr (double up on Palace and move the cash into midfield)
    C) R.Morisson -> Sterling (who I fear may be rotated soon)

Planning to WC as late as possible.
    Any recommendations?

Just to reply to EVERYONE else who went the other way. I decide who Im playing when I chose the goalkeepers such that 10 GWs in advance I know who I will pick. Did me proud in the Boruc/Speroni rotation for first dozen GWs. I agree with the pick and stick approach so you take the decision making out of it, however, my approach does that too.

Found a couple of real nice rotations involving Cardiff for anyone interested. Could be a GK, DEF or 4th/5th MID rotation. Both are from GW24 till the end of the season.

    CARDIFF + SUNDERLAND:

    NOR - HUL - AVL - HUL - WBA - FUL - CPL - nor - WHM - CPL - sot/EVE - STK - CAR - new - SWA

    CARDIFF + WEST BROM:

    NOR - cpl - AVL - HUL - sun - FUL - swa - hul - CAR - CPL - sot - STK - WHM - new -STK

The Cardiff/Sunderland rotation is so nice I'm thinking about going for Marshall/Mannone + Turner/Brown in the Jan WC and doubling up every now and then in the really good fixtures. A Ki/Mutch or Whitts could be good too for people trying to afford S.A.R.

Not sure, I looked the other day and once you get past GW25 there aren't many games where I could play a Palace defender and feel optimistic about a CS. Same applies to Hull which is a shame for the 4m options

What happens when your transfers for the past few GWs and for this GW have mostly been punts:

    Mannone
    Kolarov, Terry, Coleman
    Walcott, Cazorla, Lamela, Januzaj
    Suarez, Lukaku, Berbatov

    Bench: suspended/crap fixtures

    You know you love it

GW22 I think if Aguero and Ozil are ready. It doesn't look so bad in GW21 with Silva back and another FT to use.

Adding up the ownership of Kolarov, Caz, Lamela and Berba comes to about 7% 😎

    good evening guys.

How did ye all get on this GW?

Finally got a green arrow, my fist one in seven GWs!

Happy enough but my squad a plagued with out of form players and injuries.

      Dawson - Kos
Ramsey - Lallana/Sterling/Cabaye - This one depends how long term you're thinking. Short term, Sterling, long term I'd go Lallana over Cabaye, many wouldn't.
