The Community Round Up

With the campaign drawing to a close, members of the Fantasy Football Scout community were preparing to roll out the red carpet and dish out end-of-season awards. We revisit the week’s discussions to call in on the names earning the plaudits, whilst also harking back to topics which assessed the merits of daring to be different and next season’s potential backline bargains. Elsewhere, we warm up for the World Cup by recalling a discussion that focused on a rather unique international clash. Finally, in our regular summary of the community competitions, we drop in on a new tournament that’s been testing our crystal ball gazing skills to their limit.

The Hottest Topics

Last weekend’s announcement of the PFA’s team of the year proved the catalyst for a glut of posts to honour your top players from the season. Our hot topic proved one of the most popular this week and, while your own selection shared several similarities with the PFA’s choice, some also reserved accolades for unsung heroes who had helped shape their Fantasy season. Granville was quick to point out the value provided by Emmanuel Adebayor during his purple patch, while Sunderland’s Vito Mannone was the undisputed keeper of choice, with the likes of Moin and Walrus Eggs among those dishing out the praise.

Robareid was also inspired to quiz the community for end of season favourites, this time focusing on most enjoyable players to own. Christian Eriksen was his choice, with the likes of Yaya Toure, Seamus Coleman and even Bryan Oviedo earning a mention amongst the discussion that ensued. It was a topic that was revisited only this weekend, with Kingston’s request for a roll call on the season’s FPL Heroes and Villains.

It wasn’t just players earning recognition in this week. Accounting on Chris decided to turn the subject of awards back onto the community itself, asking you for nominations for your favourite posters from the season, providing another of the week’s most popular threads.

Giggs Boson earned a mention in that particular topic and he was duly on hand to continue the retrospective theme, as he cast an eye back over the top Gameweek FPL point scorers. His post certainly highlighted the value in searching out differentials, as the discussion recalled the impact of André Schürrle’s Gameweek 28 tally and Gameweek 34’s surprise success story that was Jason Puncheon.

Looking forward, Andy1’s recent hot topic immediately assessed the assets on offer from relegated Fulham and Cardiff to ask which of their squad are likely to remain on our player list next season. Earlier in the week, we also prompted you to kick-off your plans by requesting your tips on the potential value defenders and goalkeepers on offer in the 2014/15 campaign. With the Everton, Crystal Palace and Chelsea rearguard all set for a hike in price, JimLad reckons that Newcastle could become a great alternative source of cheap defensive points. Meanwhile, Dufflinks had other ideas, pointing out that, without Europa League distractions, Swansea defenders are likely to perform better next season and could prove attractive investments.

Finally, The Sarjeant helped to ease us into World Cup mode by recalling one of the strangest international matches that has ever taken place, where Barbados and Grenada in 1994 took own goals to a new level of ridiculousness. Be sure to check out the chatter and the footage in his thread.

The Community Tournaments

The Sarjeant makes another appearance in this week’s round-up, this time as creator and host of the Punters Predictions competition for a contest that challenges entrants from the community to accumulate points for correct score and result predictions. Skogen89 led the way this week, with Ryan Giggs One More Year running in second.

Meanwhile, over in the Puffinboy Memorial Cup, a tournament dedicated to one of Fantasy Football Scout’s very first posters, DonTheSpecialOne looks to have secured glory: he goes into Gameweek 38 with an impressive 37 point lead.

Sold him for Rooney for a hit n advance of gw36 for the two gws...

Was comfortably ahead after round 1, 11 (15-4) vs 2, but Wayne failing to answer the bell in round 2 thinking he had it sewn up already is a bit of a disappointment. I think I break even if Suarez gets less than 14 as I have Baines coming in for him off the bench.

So, yes, many pillows behind the sofa.

correct. just highlighting how the whole 5 games thing is actually fairly normal over a season, it's just unusual to have it all at the start.

So glad I planned for this DGW...Chester, Aguero, Rooney....

It makes me wonder whether it's better just not to think about it until the DGW comes and then just get 1/2 players in (captaining one)

Logic told me to get Kosc in once he returned from injury. Then i got DGW-fever and got the likes of Amalfitano Rooney and Hart in.

Made a note to just take play the DGW easy with 2-3 of the obvious picks and maybe 1 punt...not destroying the team just to fill it up DGW players.

Maybe cos it was the penultimate GW of the season hence i didnt really give a flying fook anyway...

    No duffers

Just half a dozen serious picks to share out would be fantastic.

This is my big idea for FPL. I said it at the start of this season, to a mixed response, but I think it is becoming more valid as football tactics evolves.

Instead of having GKs, Defs, Mids and Fwds, they should have:

    GKs - as is now
Defensive Players - all defenders plus defensive midfielders - these would all get 4 points for a CS and 6 for a goal. I think that defensive midfielders contribute just as much to a CS as defenders do.
Attacking Players - all attacking midfielders and strikers - these would all get 4 for a goal and none for a CS.

You would have a squad of 2 GKs, 5 or 6 defensive players and 7 or 8 attacking players. Minimum 3 of each to be played each week.

All players would get 3 for an assist. Penalties should be worth less than regular goals, maybe 3 points regardless of who scores them.

Yes, there would be some work for FPL to decide if mids are defensive or attacking but no more than they have now between mids and fwds.

    Something like that!

If there's really that much doubt either way about one single player, then why not just flip a coin and go with it?

If it's only one player you end up mis-categorising then that's an improvement on what we currently have.

correct, id be happy with penalty points being the same as everyone, so that i wont feel like i have to own Baines all the time for example, if he gets a pen then meh its say 4 points same as a striker goal, a striker in my opinion should always be the penalty taker as strikers get the most goals, like Alan Shearer once said, if the opprtunity to score a goal is there and ur a striker, "im grabbing the ball"

Probably no better or worse than the current system. Would allow us to field say 3 defenders and 7 attacking midfielders, or 6 defenders and 4 forwards if we wished, which might sometimes be quite nice.

I prefer your idea of reducing the number of different categories to Mark's idea of creating additional ones - your idea allows more flexibility, and causes fewer problems when the squad is hit by multiple injuries..

But what about attacking defenders such as Baines and Coleman and other wing-backs?

3 subs while a game is active would add some good fun, IMO.

No doubt its been asked to death but... Aguero unlikely to make the midweek game? I saw the twitter post saying he's fine, still unlikely to feature right?

I'd have thought he'll figure given the news from the horses mouth. Probably start again and then get removed if the game is secured or if he gets another scare.

I've only seen that and hope that he's back. Any Man City fans (or anyone) know anything more concrete? With Man City still needing to win both games surely if he's fit he'll play?

Just a thought, but if the difference between Chelsea being successful or not this season was a world class striker, then why didn't Mourinho sign one last summer?

I know he wanted Rooney, but was that a realistic target? United got a lot of criticism for failing to land what most commentators thought was an unrealistic target (Fabregas) yet Chelsea have not suffered the same criticism.

There was no plan B in the event United would not sell Rooney, and Mourinho declared he was happy with his squad. There was also quite a number of world class strikers available such as Cavani, Falcao, Suarez, Higuin etc.

Mourinho has now said his priority is a 'killer' striker. But how is that different from last summer? And how much responsibility should he take for putting all his eggs in one Rooney shaped basket?

In my view, Chelsea not having a world class striker is no excuse for Mourinho's failings this season. I would say that IS one of his failings this season.

Yeah, the whole Rooney saga last summer was a mystery to me. From the outside, Jose looked unlikely to prise him form Old Trafford but something must have convinced him otherwise. I can't believe for one minute that Mourinho would have been chasing Rooney without some real conviction that he'd get him. Who knows what went on there.

To be fair, Mourinho is telling the Chelsea fans what they want to hear and expect to hear following this season's failings. There's no way he could not claim that a striker is a priority but you're right, it does expose the failing to sign one ahead of this season.

        Very interesting question that!

I think he may have been brought in to compliment the existing strikers, rather than be a credible alternative to Rooney.

Either way, he was not what Chelsea needed to be successful this season.

He also had the January window, but seemed more focused on snatching Salah from Rodgers than to solve his striker problem.

        Fair point. Perhaps not.

My feeling was that if Liverpool received a bid for 60m+ they may have sold. However, perhaps not to Chelsea.

Regarding the Rooney situation I wouldn't be surprised if Rooneys people had given Chelsea the nod but ultimately United would not sell.

According to WhoScored, Barkley has 0 assists this year and only averages 0.7 key passes a game. That's pretty crap (as far as a spot in the England XI goes) for an AMC in such an attacking team as Everton.
