World Cup 2014 – Dugout Discussion – Matchday 5, Day 2

Matchday 5 of the Brazil World Cup continues this evening as four sides square up for the right to join Brazil and Germany in the semi-finals. First up, Argentina take on Belgium in the 5pm showdown before Holland and underdogs Costa Rica go head-to-head in the 9pm kick-off:

Argentina: Romero, Zabaleta, Garay, Demichelis, Basanta; Mascherano, Biglia, Di Maria, Messi, Higuain, Lavezzi

Belgium: Courtois, Alderweireld, Kompany, Van Buyten, Vertonghen;Witsel, Fellaini, De Bruyne; Mirallas, Origi, Hazard

In the later match, Louis Van Gaal’s men are seeking a fifth straight victory to take them into the last four. The Dutch have racked up 12 goals on their way to the quarter-finals and, with three strikes apiece, front two Robin Van Persie and Arjen Robben have netted half their nation’s goals, with the latter also chipping in with an assist. Van Persie will be expected to retain his starting berth in spite of a poor showing against Mexico last time around, whilst Daley Blind’s Fantasy owners will be looking for the Ajax man to add to his current tally of three assists – if Nigel de Jong fails to recover from injury, Blind is expected to start in central midfield this evening.

The Costa Ricans have already shown they are no pushovers though. Back-to-back wins over Uruguay and Italy helped clinch Group D and with just two goals conceded over the tournament so far, Keylor Navas has been an inspiration between the posts for Jorge Luis Pinto’s side. Having scored each of his side’s last two goals, Bryan Ruiz is the main threat from the underdogs, though Joel Campbell, with a goal and assist to his name, and left winger Christian Bolanos, with a pair of assists, could also be key in providing an upset.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

This may be an unpopular opinion...

I think referees should intervene on all the gamesmanship that now goes on at penalties. Dancing on the line is acceptable I suppose. I just don't agree with keepers walking round the penalty box, holding on to the ball and genuinely 'talking trash' to the taker. Go to the line and stay ON the line. Same goes for players who deliberately scuff the spot when a penalty is awarded, think it should be a bookable offence.

    Semi Final Differentials:

    Argentina:

Enzo Perez - will take up Di Maria's role
Gonzalo Higuain - best performance of this World Cup v Belgium, a player who knows how to score goals

    Netherlands:

Wesley Sneijder - Rattled the woodwork twice v Costa Rica, and has gotten better as the tournament has progressed
Memphis Depay - Not nailed on, but poses a great threat with his pace and dribbling ability

    Germany:

Andre Schurrle - Looked very lively when he came on v Germany, and should start ahead of Klose in the semi
Mesut Ozil - Has been decidedly mediocre this World Cup, struggling out on the wing, but is capable of orchestrating a moment of brilliance that changes the game
Toni Kroos - The midfield maestro is on indirect free-kicks and corners, feeding the dangerous Hummels in the box several times throughout the tournament

    Brazil:

Willian - Should start in the place of Neymar and has a good final ball on him
Fred - He has been shocking throughout the tournament, but is now on penalties and as the central striker will always be given opportunities to score
Hulk - Has looked good in the knockout stages, and his matchup against the out-of-position Howedes could be key for Brazil's chances

actually Enzo Perez is a very good player, but in Benfica he doesn't play as a winger he plays in the middle ...if you wan't to compare him with some other player, i would compare in for example Axel Witsel or a lower quality Ramires.

Sabella his a dumb coach, and for that he will put Enzo in a place that he can do it, but won't take the best from him.

But with only 40 transfers a season it's madness! Really, rvp and sturridge get injured about 5 times in a season. If you have a player and transfer them out, and then want to get them back in again i wonder if that counts as a transfer?

            it seems a bit broken.

Smarty Pants figures out all the things by looking at the mini-leagues and figuring it out. He has been updating my team daily with the table somehow. To be honest I don't know how he figures it out. According to his table I beat Roscola, Emperikal beat Zan Keroski and Smarty beat you.

I would not waste $ on 3 attackers
Play 5/4/1 with 2 attackers. Switch to 5/3/2 if the first attacker has a great game.
Splurge on Luiz, Hummels, Boateng, Oscar
      Make a defender your captain
McD scoring rules absolutely favour defence
And since no points for shots on net or passes or dribbles, attackers need to score. Which they're not doing all that often.
