Moving Target

Moving Target – Bacary Sagna

Manchester City kick-started a summer of restructuring last month by confirming the acquisition of Bacary Sagna from Arsenal on a three-year deal. After failing to agree an improved contract with the Gunners, the 31-year-old will arrive at the Etihad as a free agent and follows in the footsteps of Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri in swapping north London for the blue half of Manchester:

The History

A product of the FC Sens and Auxerre youth academies, Sagna made his debut for the latter back in the 2004-05 campaign. Over the course of three seasons, the right-back made 104 appearances and provided four assists for the Ligue 1 club – voted Auxerre Player of the Year in 2006-07, his displays persuaded Arsene Wenger to fork out £7m for his services in July 2007.

The Frenchman lasted seven years at the Emirates and with little competition for a first-team place, made 284 Premier League appearances for the north London outfit. Sagna’s raids down the right served up five goals and 27 assists and saw him named in the PFA Player of the Year XI on two occasions – 2007-08 and 2010-11 – though his only piece of silverware arrived just last May, when Arsenal defeated Hull City to lift the FA Cup.

On the international stage, Sagna made his debut back in 2007 and has subsequently turned out for his country on 40 occasions, though his fallen down the pecking order in recent times and remains second choice right-back behind Newcastle’s Mathieu Debuchy.

The Prospects

With a first full season at the helm now behind him, Pellegrini is clearly intent on replenishing his options at the back. Already this summer, Costel Pantilimon has moved to Sunderland, Joleon Lescott has joined West Brom, whilst Micah Richards is also set to leave the club under freedom of contract after failing to convince the Chilean he was worthy of a place in the first-team squad.

Sagna’s arrival affords City a proven Premier League player, who is also capable of filling in at centre-half if the need arises. While that may be all good and well for Pellegrini, from a Fantasy perspective it looks to have killed the prospects of both Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta for the season ahead. With Richards either struggling with injury or out of form, the Argentine was named in the first XI in 34 of City’s league matches last term – Sagna was similarly nailed-on at Arsenal, also starting 34 times, and it looks like his acquisition will merely allow Pellegrini the chance to rotate the spot with far more regularity. Indeed, one look at the City left-back berth, where Clichy made 21 starts and Aleksandar Kolarov managed 18, is perhaps indicative as to what we can expect.

With Martin Demichelis approaching 34 years of age and Matija Nastasic plagued with a back problem, it looks likely that Vincent Kompany will be the one City defender we can rely upon unless Pellegrini strengthens further. At the Emirates, though, Wenger tends to rarely rotate his defence – a potential move for Debuchy would bring him immediately onto our radars, though the likes of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker remain strong routes into a backline that conceded just 11 times at home last term.

The recently-released Premier League fixture list has handed Pellegrini a tricky opening few fixtures. Showdowns with Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea in the first five Gameweeks suggest that many will steer clear of their defensive assets from the off but even when the schedule clears, Sagna and Zabaleta – with 133 points and 146 points in last term’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game respectively – both look set to be crossed off our Fantasy radars unless injuries allow one of the duo to nail down a regular role.

Would be nice to see Fabregas letting his owners down. He's an abrahamovic player, not a Mourinho one. Will be a squad player, starting 60-70% of the games, at best

As bad as it will be seeing chelsea benefit from his brilliance, it'd be worse to see chelsea ruin him and turn him into Mikel MKII.

because he wasn't good enough to be a CM. Changed his position before the start of 2009-10 season, and his performances, along with Arsenal's improved tremendously

Barkley is the type i end up not getting and then he gets two goals in the opening game, i feel crushed, all my long plans are put in chaos, I buy him, then he does nothing for 3 games before hurting his toe.

Never get Barkley. Overhyped (fpl wise). Scores a decent goal every few months but doesn't take enough shots in the box.

He's a young player that you can expect improvement from. You would have said the same about Ramsey before the start of last season. I'm not saying get barkley but these young guys can often be mis-priced due to their previous seasons form when the improvement year on year can make them a bargain as a result. Look at coleman last year too

of course he can improve, and probably will but i'm looking at it from an FPL point of view. stats don't disagree, good player in real, overrated fpl wise

I agree he was overrated in fpl terms last year (and real terms imo) but if RM can coach him to get in the box more to get on the end of things he could end up another Ramsey/bale. All these young guns look overrated before their breakout season.

As I say I'm not saying get him or that I'll be getting him but he fits the profile of the type of player with real potential that I keep a close eye on each year.

I missed Ramsey last year but the funny thing was I has him for a spell the season he broke his leg so I saw the potential back then.

Could easily end up being the case. With Cesc in the fray his protecting in front of their back four will be very important. Can see Mou moving Cesc around based on their opposition and if he wants to go for a more offensive or defensive setup.

Only hazard because of penalties. fabregas and costa will surely get some of the goals, win some of the games, and rvp is still injury prone. If i have to pick, I'd rather have sturridge and sanchez. ramsey the first name. which means i need united midfield...mata...

Had another attempt at a Telegraph side, purely to pass the time:

    Adrian
    Azpi - Ward - Stones
    Hazard - Ramsey - Eriksen - Tadic
    Sturridge - Dzeko - Bony

That's all the £50m spent. Thoughts?

probably not! Not played telegraph before, or sky, as i will now (lure of money which I'll obviously get no where near winning but anyway). Lamela was just the best of a bunch. I'll keep an eye on pre season games, and shift players around. Eriksen never played in the hole for sherwood, mainly set pieces man, wondering about mata too. I know aguero is always injured and bony is having his second season, but those two names combined don't sound convincing. Overall their stats eventually do seem good. I wonder about jovetic.

If Sterling selected as Mid, he would be the last piece, if not, Lallana would be my choice.

Will have to adjust his points for the extra transfers you'll have to spend yoyoing him in and out of your team with his constant injuries though 🙂

He could be in for a big season. I think he is pretty nailed on for them now despite the influx of mids at Pool. I can see him getting overlooked at the onset though with so many other options.

I see that too. Studge is locked in my side for sure so squeezing Raheem will be hard..

He will be one that is seen as overpriced.. started 9.0 last year right? If that doesn't go to at least 10.5 I'll be surprised.

You're probably right... there will be better value for cheaper.

I think 10.5 or 11.0 would be fair for him. He was so prolific when he did actually play...but knocked down a bit for how much time he missed. He may well earn his price but I don't think I will have him at the beginning. Lots of changes for Pool, may do well to wait and see how they get on.

I usually printscreen the team to show it in the forum or what not. Never used that remembering ID approach.

Is it just me or is anyone else considering going 433 to start off with our 100m budgets? There are so many attractive team defenses to me and with the way the bonus points flow to the CBs I think I may prefer adding another defender to my starting lineup than roll the dice on a 6ish mid.

defenders last year were under rated. but as always the trend takes a while to come to fruition.
The likes of Coleman, Zaba, Skrtel and Mertesacker were great options and the "premium" defenders are easier to pick than the midfielders of the same price bracket.

Aside from the big dogs in the midfield, the mid-prices are a mine field to pick from. So yes, I think I might be going with 433 to start. although I can already tell you I will change my mind 453 times...

I like the idea of avoiding that minefield and hopping on the first or second bandwagon instead of trying to pick it from the onset. The only problem with that is that it will likely take two transfers to free up funds to upgrade that 4th mid. So would require either an early save or a hit. But hey - hits are fun 🙂

Maybe. I certainly won't mind pumping an extra mil to get a decent defender over an average midfielder anyways

Pl fixtures are fine home to city, home to spurs, away at chelsea will be tight with last years game in mind, 2 CS against leicester and CP, eveton without Lukaku dont seem that big of a threat, the problem is Champions league games during that period and rotation especially becuase they can afford it now.

I actually quite like the look of having both Ozil and Ramsey. We may be best off to have a short-term memory with Ozil - I think he may have a truckload of assists this year with sanchez back and possibly Wally back in addition to his year spent adjusting to the prem. He could be a very good buy if he comes in at 9.0
