Moving Target

Moving Target – Steven Caulker

Just five days after signing Rio Ferdinand on a free transfer, Harry Redknapp continued to strengthen his back line for the season ahead with the acquisition of Steven Caulker from relegated Cardiff City.

Joining up on a four-year contract, the 22-year-old admitted that the presence of his former Spurs boss and the arrival of the veteran centre-half were both key to his decision:

“I am very excited to be here. It was important for me to be back playing in the Premier League, and Harry Redknapp has given me the opportunity to be at this fantastic club. Harry was a big factor for me, having worked with him at Tottenham. He was very keen for me to join and that was a big plus, knowing the manager wants you. Being able to play with Rio was also a big draw. He has been a role model of mine for many years, along with Ledley King. To have the opportunity to play alongside him was something I felt I couldn’t miss out on. Our first aim this season has to be to get to 40 points, to make sure we stay up. That’s our first goal.”

The History

A product of the Tottenham youth academy, Caulker’s career got underway in 2009/10, when he played 44 times on loan at Yeovil Town. The centre-half was again farmed out to a lower league club the following season, scoring twice in 29 matches for Bristol City, before making his way to Swansea in a year-long loan deal in 2011/12.

Under the guidance of then-manager Brendan Rodgers, Caulker featured on 26 occasions for the Premier League outfit, with only a knee injury curtailing his game time. Retained by his parent club for the following season, he failed to nail down a regular role and, after making just 18 appearances under Andre Villas-Boas, was sold to Cardiff City last summer.

Nailed-on for The Bluebirds, Caulker was the only defender to play all 38 league matches in last term’s top-flight and his aerial threat in the opposition box saw him score on five occasions; only Martin Skrtel and Seamus Coleman, with seven and six respectively, registered more.

On the international stage, Caulker has turned out 21 times for England youth teams and found the net twice. Despite scoring on his debut for the senior side back in 2012, he has yet to feature for the Three Lions since.

The Prospects

Having watched his side muster a mere nine clean sheets at home in 23 Championship matches last season, it’s no surprise to see Redknapp strengthen at the back as he attempts to keep the R’s afloat. Ferdinand’s experience and leadership qualities, allied with the agile Caulker’s threat in the opposition box, suggest QPR have every reason to approach the upcoming campaign with increased optimism.

Redknapp – who handed Caulker his Spurs debut – lavished praise upon the new boy after the deal was confirmed by the club’s official website:

“Steven’s a top player, so we’re delighted to have him at QPR. I know the ability he has and I think it’s an important signing for the club – for the here and now, and for the future. I had him at Tottenham and I was very surprised when they decided to let him go last summer, because I thought he had a big future there. He’s young; he’s a good age; he’s already a fine player but he has so much more potential – it’s a really excellent signing for the club. When good players like Steven become available, who can come in and have a real impact, you’ve got to try and get them. I’m sure he will come in and show exactly what he’s capable of – he’s got everything to be a top, top centre-half, so I couldn’t be more pleased to have him.”

Barring injuries, the Caulker-Ferdinand partnership looks set to be rolled out for the entirety of the 2014/15, leaving the likes of Richard Dunne and Clint Hill as no more than bench-warmers. Coming in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game, Caulker’s extra goal threat makes him the most expensive option amongst Redknapp’s backline but, as his heroics for Cardiff showed last term, he’s more than capable of justifying the extra outlay. With 19 bonus points accrued, he ended the previous campaign on 122 points – 15th amongst defenders – despite the Bluebirds mustering a mere seven clean sheets and conceding on 74 occasions.

The only real issue is that Caulker’s attacking potential makes him difficult to bench and trickier to play the fixtures – two of those five goals arrived on the road last time around. Bearing in mind that QPR rotate home/away with Palace for 34 of the 38 Gameweeks, some will perhaps turn to the cheaper Ferdinand, at 4.5, as a more budget-friendly option to dovetail with the Eagles. Such a pairing would hand you eight kind home fixtures (HUL, WHM, SUN, BUR, STO, LEI, AVL, SUN) in the first 10 rounds of matches, for example.

Further analysis of last season’s stats, however, underline Caulker’s capabilities and strengthen his case for consideration. He had more touches inside the opposition box (116) than any other defender and, as a result, was also top for attempts in the area (32) amongst backline options. If Ferdinand can help bolster resilience at the back, then, a 5.0 price tag could prove excellent value for his new central defensive partner.

As for playing on the wing he might get a bit of a chance due to lallana but I highly doubt it. I stand by my thinking of a rotation risk however none of us know till they actually play in the first game of the prem.

They will play some games with 2 strikers. Brendan wanted the most from the pair. The team played well, shared goals. Personally I see Remy playing around 25 games this season, as there will be some rotation and injury too.

I'm with you, RodallegaBomb. LFC played 2 strikers for nearly the entirety of every match (S&S) last season. I don't know why they'd reconsider that now.

I can't see Sturridge being outright rested... he'd likely start any match he can, if healthy.
Haven't heard a case for starting Lambert over Remy that I'd believe; they're two very different players.
Am I missing something? Seems like you sub Lambert on after 60min if you're chasing a goal, or if Sturridge/Remy start to lag or limp.

If we don't sign another winger, yes. He will play central for a large number of games too, so his versatility means less rotation. He played in 5 different positions last season.

If you considered Southampton a promoted team (no SChneiderlin, Chambers, et al), I still rate them higher than QPR, Villa, Burnley for sticking in the Premiership.

They've bought talent, even if only 2 players, and surely they'll make another purchase or three before the deadline.

Vegas is great for shows and antisocial entertainment. The food is great, but I think of it like being on a cruise ship that's parked in the desert. Lots of lights and noises and alcohol, but it's all manufactures.

California is enormous and diverse. If you want to go hiking, you can do that. If you want to see whales in the ocean, you can do that. Food is fantastic, etc.
I could stay in a smaller town like Ventura and have much more fun than in Vegas. I'm really biased against Vegas, for what it's worth.

No it's good to read a bias opinion against Vegas to be honest as it shows me the bad points of the place. Everyone's help here is appreciated and has gave me a lot of food for thought.

put this question up during dead zone and you can get americans to opine.

if you like gambling and eating and drinking, go to Vegas. Even in March it's relatively hot there.

If you want more scenery, beaches, and culture, go to California. Southern Cal will be warm, but if you get north of Santa Barbara, (San Francisco, etc) it will be mild. So if you're looking for heat and sun, stay south.

Grand Canyon unmissable, but be prepared to stay overnight incase of bizarre weather (yes, even in summer). 1 day plenty in Vegas unless you're a big gambler - not far from LA, you could easily do both

3 nights for Vegas. The best hotel for me - Venetian, then Wynn. If u want cheaper - Trump. Give at reception desk 20$ and ask upgrade and nice view. I received at Trump better room with nice view(at Vdara i did the same, but Trump better for me). Then there are special packets, like dinner+show(cirque de soleil) and drink at bar. I booked at the Venetian(about 200$ total). I recommend to visit show at Bellagio or Wynn and to see all 5stars hotel, they are amazing. Try slots too 🙂
Don't go to Grand Canyon! There are places much more amazing! Zion canyon, Yosemite park, Bryce canyon, Antelope canyon, Horseshoe bend, Lake Powell, and other. AMAZING!!!
I enjoyed trip to California, took california highway coast, from San Francisco to San Diego.
I liked Santa Barbara(1 day) and San Diego from Coronado island.
The best place in LA is universal studios, bud u should buy there priority(total price about 140$)

So…decide..I like nature…so i recommend LV 3-4 days, then take trip to canyons…u can go throw route 66, but about 1-1,5 hours only…

Not sure how much it has been discussed recently, but certainly looks and sounds like Man U will go with a 3-5-2 / 3-4-1-2 formation.

They used this system this against LA Galaxy and won 7-0, with Jones, Evans and Smalling being deployed as the 3 centre backs, and Luke Shaw being used as a wing back. It's just the one friendly where it has been used so far, but LVG and Mata have also talked up using this formation, with LVG basically saying why play 4-3-3 with Rooney / Mata out of position and Rafael at right back, when I could play 3-5-2 and have my best players happy.

So, relating this to FPL, if Man U don't sign another centre back (Which is highly unlikely) then you can't go wrong choosing Smalling / Jones at 5.5, or Luke Shaw at 6.0 with it being very likely that he will play further forward down the wing. This most probably means that if you have Rafael in your FPL team you should take him out, as he will struggle for game time with LVG most probably preferring Valencia due to his more attacking ability.

Hope that is useful to someone who may have not taken note of MU's friendly and the press conferences.

His price tag of just 5.0 is something to lick your lips over. Also, with his tendency to carry the ball into the oppositions half, he could have some decent attacking returns. He will be in majority of teams if the transfer does happen.

    Poor Norwich.

Norwich forced to apologise after claiming to have beaten an Italian club 13-0

Rodgers love fast, tricky, direct attackers and we've added Markovic, Lallana and Remy in addition to Sterling and Sturridge. The amount of penalties we got last season was not a happy accident, it's the wonderful bi-product of having lots of players who commit defenders and make them look foolish.

Hi all, am new to the site & wondered if I could gt a quick RMT on my 1st draft (currently waiting for grav to update). Aim to rotate between 3-4-3 / 3-5-2:

    Courtois / Green
    Debuchy / Bavies / Demel / Mariappa / Wisdom
    Ramsey / Eriksen / Fab / Sigs / Arnie
    Rooney / Dzeko / Pelle

    Concerns:
GKs starting places? (Note: prefer not to rotate 2 cheapies as have been burnt before)
Debuchy & Mari starting places? Demel inj today?
Fab playing position & Pelle the new Boselli?!

    Many thanks for any feedback!

Don't think there is any reasonable options at 4.5. Zamora probably won't play enough to warrant being in your team. If you can eek out another 0.5 then Kane could be a decent option at the start playing in a team as good as Tottenham.
