Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 4

As always on a Monday afternoon, we scour the Premier League treatment rooms to assess the players who picked up injuries over the weekend action.

Arsenal
Mathieu Debuchy was forced off with an ankle injury in Saturday lunchtime’s draw with City. Arsene Wenger is set to address the press later today amid fears the Frenchman could be sidelined for months.

Burnley
The Clarets’ forward Danny Ings was subbed off with a hamstring problem in the weekend draw at Palace, while Matty Taylor missed out altogether due to injury, allowing George Boyd to make his debut on the left of midfield.

Chelsea
Didier Drogba missed the Blues’ home win over Swansea after injuring an ankle during training.

Crystal Palace
Neil Warnock confirmed Joe Ledley sustained a hip injury in the Palace dugout and was unable to take to the field against Burnley. The Palace boss also revealed Wilfried Zaha was lucky to make the match after picking up an ankle injury in training.

Everton
Sylvain Distin missed the Toffees’ win at West Brom due to a dead leg, though Roberto Martinez confirmed earlier today that the defender is on course to feature against Wolfsburg in the Europa League on Thursday.

Leicester
Foxes number one Kasper Schmeichel missed Saturday’s win at Stoke after sustaining a minor knee problem on international duty with Denmark.

Stoke
The Potters’ left-back Erik Pieters was forced off with an unspecified injury in the latter stages of Saturday’s home loss to Leicester.

Swansea
Jordi Amat is set for knee scans after picking up a problem in the weekend loss to Chelsea – the defender left Stamford Brigde with his leg in a brace.

Tottenham
Jan Vertonghen was omitted from the weekend trip to Sunderland after picking up a minor muscle injury.

West Brom
Stephane Sessegnon was ruled out of the weekend home loss to Everton after sustaining an eye injury in training.

Just want to say, I'm willing to answer any questions regarding Leicester (expected line up etc.), should you require information. Sort of what Lucy does with Saints, I'll be available.

How do you see the returns from the Leicester defence going?

Obviously they've had some tough fixtures, but been fairly tight, how do you think they'll fare once they get an easier run of games? Can Moore be relied upon as a decent 4.0?

      1. davies
        • 10 Years
        10 years, 8 days ago

Hard to tell what tactics Nige decides to go with. Should we operate in a 433, we'll be more secure defensively. The problem is, our upcoming games are 'must-win' so could leave holes. Moore is one of the best options at 4.0, without a doubt.

How real is Ulloa? I have Costa, Rooney, and Pelle so not really thinking I need to change anything, but hard to not notice the big results for cheap. But really, how likely is he to keep it up?

He's got as good as chance as ever to keep up this form. With our upcoming fixtures (besides MUN), he's one to keep an eye one, definitely.

I think this is the best possible combination at the price, too. Even if McCarthy doesn't take Green's place, Southampton look fairly solid, have great fixtures, and Forster looks like picking up save points.

Just one more thing on the Baines debate, I promise.

He’s been Everton’s undisputed left back for the last five seasons now; if he’s fit, he plays. He’s missed only 12 games in that time, without making a single substitute appearance. Because of this, his Points Per Game figures in FPL are quite revealing – they’re not distorted by cameos.

Last season he was out injured for a run of six matches, a long spell on the side-lines for him, and scored 169 points from 32 appearances. His two highest scoring seasons came in 2010-11 (178 points) and 2012-13 (177 points), and in both cases, he played all 38 matches.

Baines’ best ever PPG figure in FPL came last year, however. If he’d stayed fit for all 38 games, keeping up the same rate of scoring, he would have actually topped 200 points. On this evidence, the effect of Martinez’s style on Baines himself so far has been promising to say the least. For me, despite Roscola’s well argued prediction of a drop off in defensive returns, it would have to be a pretty spectacular departure from last season to reduce the appeal of Baines.

Baines PPG by season (rounded to one decimal place):

    2013-14: 5.3
    2012-13: 4.7
    2011-12: 4.1
    2010-11: 4.7
    2009-10: 3.7

They're not really. And the big point is that they were very bad last season as well, masked by a superhuman performance from Howard which will most likely regress to the mean.

Dont tend to see many teams with a high finish have Baines in the side

I just posted this on the hot topic as well Rosco

You do mention that they conceded six times as many shots as West Brom. However, there is another stat worth looking at called 'big chances conceded' which was 0 last week for Everton.

Imo big chances conceded is a better indicator because shots inside the box fails to take into account the pressure that was being put on the player who took the shot (whether he was being closed down or not)

But surely that bump came from defensive returns? Baines kept 13 clean sheets, and missed out on 2 during his injury. If as Roscola predicts, the clean sheets dry up Baines will likely be at 4.7ish PPG rather than 5.3 w/ a potential downside of 4.0 if Everton are unlucky with penalties. If Everton aren't an elite, or at least good, defensive side both Baines' ceiling and floor fall substantially.

      1. Ludo
        • 10 Years
        10 years, 8 days ago

It was partly due to an increase in defensive returns, yep. However, he also equalled his best ever goals total, in 6 games fewer, and got his highest ever number of bonus points, in 6 games fewer. The new BPS system introduced last season really favours him - he leads the way on BPS among Everton defenders again so far this year.

baines should always be a player you get in bursts imo. maybe once or twice a season. i don't buy into season keeper due to finishing as the highest defender each season or having the best ppg of defenders each season. a couple of season ago i actually outscored him with a 4mil defender over 8 gameweeks for example

Not sure about Juventus, seems like they're moving from 3 to 4 at the back so might take time getting used to.
Benatia should play but I don't fancy Bayern defence, Pep has been fiddling with the back line(Lahm & Alaba mainly) and hasn't found a good solution yet.

I think my transfer this week will be to sell the man, he's been underwhelming to say the least but I'm yet undecided as to how to replace him

i think of things a bit differently so maybe this will help:
      (a) do I believe in the Chelsea defence (allowing for fixtures)
      (b) is he my worst player

in fact he's not my worst player...that's Dzeko...so I'm not selling him this week and he's got a good fixture next week so I won't sell him then either

so I'm going to play Hutton at home to Arsenal and Terry is my first reserve

basically it's not worth a hit to sell him

Do we think Duff (4.0) is nailed on?

The new signings Michael Keane and Stephen Ward will add doubt to his spot.

Seems unlikely that Duff will be dropped following back to back clean sheets but long-term?

Thoughts on this lot? Players in caps are the ones I think need to go:

    Begovic Gilks
    CAHILL DEBUCHY RIO Chester Hutton
    HAZARD Ramsey Sterling Siggy Ince
    Costa Rooney Naismith

    1. Sell one/both of Cahill/Debuchy for a SWA/SOT def?
    2. Hazard - Cesc (feels like such a dirty transfer, especially for a hit)
    3. Anything else?

Morgan is a better threat, I've stated before, Moore doesn't look like a goal or BAP threat but he's nailed, so if Leicester tighten up you're getting a solid 6 points for 4.0
