Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 5

Our Monday afternoon regular is rolled out once again, as we scour the Premier League treatment rooms to assess the players who picked up injuries over the weekend action.

Aston Villa
The Midlands outfit were hit hard by a virus prior to the weekend home defeat to Arsenal. Paul Lambert confirmed Darren Bent and Nathan Baker missed out altogether, whilst Ashley Westwood also failed to feature – he was initially named in the starting XI but was forced to drop out. Andi Weimann was also subbed off at the break after struggling to overcome the same problem.

Burnley
Clarets midfielder David Jones was subbed off after 86 minutes of the weekend goalless draw against Sunderland with “a minor thigh injury”.

Chelsea
Ramires was withdrawn on 63 minutes having suffered a knee injury. Early reports suggest that the Brazilian could face a term of absence with the midfielder undergoing scans early this week.

Liverpool
Brendan Rodgers has confirmed Philippe Coutinho missed the trip to West Ham due to a groin problem, while Jordan Henderson is being assessed after picking up a hip complaint.

Man United
Jonny Evans was withdrawn after just 30 minutes of United’s loss at Leicester with a leg problem and, post-match, Louis van Gaal admitted:

“I don’t know how bad Evans is. We have to wait for a scan tomorrow but he is on crutches.”

Newcastle
Cheick Tiote will be assessed after limping off towards the end of Saturday’s home draw with Hull.

QPR
The problems are building up in midfield for Harry Redknapp. Joey Barton and Jordon Mutch were passed fit for Saturday’s home clash with Stoke after heading into the match as doubts due to hamstring problems – both players were subsequently subbed off with a recurrence of the injuries, whilst Sandro missed out altogether due to a knee complaint.

Southampton
Both Maya Yoshida and James Ward-Prowse were forced off with ankle problems in the weekend win at Swansea. New boy Toby Alderweireld missed Liberty clash with a minor hamstring problem but is expected to be back next weekend.

Sunderland
Steven Fletcher and Ricardo Alvarez missed the Black Cats’ trip to Burnley due to a calf complaint and knock respectively, though the latter has since been passed fit for tomorrow’s Capital One clash with Stoke. Gus Poyet has also revealed that Emmanuel Giaccherini was forced off on his first start of the season and will be assessed:

“Giaccherini had plenty of energy, going between the lines and I think he was one of our best players. That was the idea of playing him; to create that little bit more. He was thereabouts, so it’s not bad from him. Unfortunately, he took a big knock which we need to check today.”

Swansea
Dwight Tiendalli missed the weekend home defeat to Southampton with a slight groin problem.

West Brom
Giorgos Samaras missed out through injury as the Baggies picked up a 1-0 win at Spurs yesterday.

West Ham
Midfielder Cheick Kouyate is set to undergo scans after picking up a groin problem against Liverpool on Saturday evening – the summer signing stayed on the field after Sam Allardyce had made all three substitutions.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

i should think so as he is the focal point of scoring on his team; compared to someone with a 20% conversion rate on a team full of many other capable scorers that is not all that high scoring

Pelle is worse than a donkey , who has managed to nick a few . Welbeck will go on from here - Arsenal/ Wenger will focus on getting him into what he wants to be .

Interested in him come GW8, with a lot of the tougher defences behind them, Arsenal could go on a bit of a scoring run.

If we could pick different players every week then sure Pelle , but over a period believe Welbeck will outscore him by far.

Thinking about bringing in Calum Chambers to replace Debuchy? Don't!

Chambers is the first player this season who might qualify for a 1 match ban for 5 yellow cards.

He's on 3 already this season and picking them up at a rate of one card for every 114 minutes played - the second highest rate in the league so far this season.

Consider this; he will almost certainly have to play for an injury plagued Arsenal against 2nd place Southampton in the League Cup tomorrow. Followed by tough London derbies against Spurs and Chelsea. So he has 270 minutes to play and is very likely to pick up another 2 yellows. That would mean he could miss GW8 vs Hull.

My advice is to wait until GW8 before considering him and check his card situation then. No doubt a lot of managers have Ramsey and/or Welbeck and will also want to look out for Walcott soon. I wouldn't have Chambers right now as one of my Arsenal picks, too risky...

Good post, but everyone is thinking of bringing him in at GW8…his price is going to rocket. 19,000 have already got him in this week why not get him in early to save some money? If he has a good game against Spurs even more will get him in before Arsenal have a great run in GW8. His price is so low atm that I can have him in my team and bench him if I want, which is what i'll be doing in the next two weeks. And if he gets a yellow so what! He'll miss one GW, which could be good as Arsenal have a long run of good fixtures so his yellow card count will be reset. 4.5mil for a nailed on Arsenal defender is a bargain even if he does't have great fixtures in the next two, think long term, Debuchy is going to be out for three months!!

I would say let the armband select itself naturally, I personally believe the role of the captain in modern era is a bit overstated and any sentimentality having to do with a connection with the club is misplaced.

Are we now selecting the least poor option of a bad bunch? Why not instead go radical and look at someone like Blind (not immediately, let him show he can earn it) who will be a regular and the anchor of the midfield calling the shots from the center.

I always thought anyone either than a goalkeeper, defender or deep midfielder was a poor choice for a captain, the captain should have the full view of the action in front of him at most/all times.

LVG has always been a man proud of his conviction, I hope he has the conviction to strip Rooney of the captaincy and ease this nonsense selection headache.

          No worries.

It depends on how much you attribute to it really, maybe not a big impact on the older lads but it certainly matters for the younger boys. You see Rooney, a guy who threatens to leave every year if his wages aren't increased, do you want any young guys like Januzaj or Shaw learning from that?

A player that wants to be there. De Gea does, Blind does, Herrera does. Hard to give it to one of the new boys but I certainly can say this, Rooney is the worst of a bad lot.

this is the time for being extreme. the time for calm heads was in 2009 when we sold Ronaldo and definitely were never going to have Hargo again and did nothing to add to the squad.

be it Fergie's stubbornness (in getting his man or no one) or the Glazers shackles, United has been on a downward spiral since 2009 and only thanks to the brilliance of Fergie's management did we secure a few more titles along the way

I disagree in respect that as great as he was Fergie let United slip towards the end of his era, he never replaced ageing players and made some terrible signings. Moyes (Fergies choice I believe) came in and ultimately took most of the fall out for this, The writing was on the wall and Fergie knew it. It was written all over his face when Barca destroyed them at Wembley in the CL Final.

I think that even with the current squad and a better CB, United would still be playing poor and unimaginative football under Moyes.

But yes, Fergie and the Glazers (the percent distribution to which we will never know) shoulder all the blame for the way the squad deteriorated.

        Costa (C) - Balotelli (Naismith)

        2 FT's and £0.7m ITB, I'm thinking this -

        Balo > Pelle

Keep Ramsey for the Spurs game.

Having watched Tottenham this season, one thing that struck me was their inability to track midfield runners. There must be a reason Henderson and Allen cause them so many problems isn't it?I think until they have a coherent system under Poch which they get smart movement in forwards will cause them problems just as versus Liverpool the ast 3 times.

Having seen Arsenal play Villa this with Welbeck one expects a lot of this. Also, if you don't get me then check the Stats for each of the Spurs game and sort for penalty area touches. You would expect for the strikers to have the most touches, but its not so with midfielders doing better. (except Balotelli, but that was 3 free headers what can I say about that?)

I don't know if this makes sense. But I'm keeping the faith.
PS: If you don't believe me, I know its a small sample size but Spurs are yet to concede to a striker this season..

Pretty interesting actually. Could show their defenders are always tight to the forwards, while midfielders are not picking up midfield runners i.e. Ramsey.

Yup, who tracks the midfield runners?
              Fullbacks = wingers
              CBs = strikers
The CDM is a position invented to nullify no10s.

So when you have bombing CMs Poch has to decide whose going to track their runs..

Could change once Poch realises Dembele and Bentaleb are shit.

Stambouli/Capoue and Paulinho could be one decent CM pair.

I agree. Problem with Spurs is the managers style of play requires the whole team to buy into a particular work ethic. I don't think they have the players to do this. All decent enough individuals but too many unable to do a shift for the team.

some teams can buy their way into Champion's League (ManCity, and Chelsea long before them)

some teams spend and spend and spend, and still can't buy their way in (Spurs... and maybe now ManU?)

interesting to watch and realize there's more to it than just spending

Utd have just spent this window. Look at the net spend for United, Arsenal and Spurs over the last few years. (Pre Ozil).
It's almost nothing. (or nothing in the case of NL clubs)

It's spending in the right places and right way.

United have spent in thw rong way (saying this as a fan) and every man and his dog knows we need to do-over our defence.

Spurs haven't spent money on enough top quality to challenge clubs like Chelsea and City. All the money they've spent is on good squad/1st team players - no elite talent.

Defense of Moreno Clyne Bertrand Moore Hutton
After this week will have 2ft, Moreno is a worry but the double Saints away at Spurs is the immediate problem, thinking of losing one Saint for Robertson gw7 and then Robertson> Chambers gw8
If I do that will then have the funds for Moreno > Kolarov for free
So gw8 Defense would be Kolarov Clyne Chambers Moore Hutton
Downside of that is might be jumping of the double saints too early and Moreno still has good fixtures
          Seem sensible moves ?

I am curious as I am thinking if the on w/c do not effect price rises, it may be an advantage to play it when more people have played them to play the rises and falls to increase value at some time in the future
