Captain Sensible – Gameweek 17

Our weekly members article focussing on the Gameweek captaincy contenders arrives once again tonight. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Man City’s home encounter with Palace has persuaded over 21% to back Yaya Toure with the weekend captaincy. The Ivorian has notched three times in his last five, and with Sergio Aguero injured, has dead-ball duties to fall back on – indeed, he’s scored and earned maximum bonus in each of his previous two at the Etihad.

Robin van Persie’s ascent up the Fantasy standings earns him second spot. It’s four goals and two assists for the United forward over the last four Gameweeks, and with three sets of double figures accrued in recent outings, over 13% have opted for the Dutchman who rolls up to Villa Park with his confidence high.

Charlie Austin’s home form has persuaded over 10% of voters to back the QPR top scorer. So far this term, he’s averaged 6.5 points per appearances in front of his own fans – with five goals and two assists in his last four at Loftus Road, Austin – who has also scored against the likes of Chelsea and City in recent matches – faces a Baggies backline that has been breached only seven times on their travels.

With 7% of the votes so far, Chelsea duo Diego Costa and Eden Hazard are also very much in contention for Monday evening’s trip to Stoke. Certainly, both will need to step up their away day displays – Hazard has just two assists on his travels all season, whilst Costa has netted in just one of his last four road trips. Bearing in mind that Mark Hughes’ side have just one clean sheet in 13 Gameweeks, though, the Blues’ main men will be optimistic of prevailing at the Britannia.

Tottenham’s home encounter with strugglers Burnley has earned Christian Eriksen plenty of new backers. The Dane has racked up three sets of double-figures in five and has played a part in five of his side’s last six goals – as a result, he earns 6% of the votes cast so far.

Judging by the Poll, there are a number of candidates who could prove to be real differential options this Gameweek. West Ham trio Stewart Downing (3%), Diafra Sakho (2%) and Andy Carroll (1%) play host to Leicester, whilst Wilfried Bony’s eight goals in ten has convinced just 4% to offer him the armband as Swansea head to struggling Hull.

I bought Baines last week (having sold him a couple of weeks earlier for Clichy). QPR was a massive disappointment, but with Mirallas out and the seeming correlation between his playing and Baines's poor showing, I would say hold on to Baines for the Christmas period. Downing is a season keeper I think, but fixtures are tough for a couple after this weekend, so maybe Wanyama to Milner? Not massively exciting, but a chance of cashing in on a bumper Christmas at City

I waould say Austin, as I generally like to captain at home, and I think Roo may play deep at the weekend, though others might know better

Any suggestions guys thinking of shipping Baines next week to spread over defence? Plummeted down to 2.7k last two weeks so trying something different, gone RvP over Costa.

    Foster
    Baines, Aspi, Wisdom
    Fab, downing, Sanchez, yaya
    RvP Austin Giroud

    (Guzman, Boyd, duff, Hutton)

I am going to wait and see on Baines for a few GW's, to see if the Mirallas injury has an effect (assuming the latter doesn't play beyond this weekend).

Your team looks good to me, and I think Giroud and RvP probably give you a fair bit of differential, even in the top 3k.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes I hate to trade Baines as usually season keeper but Mirallas does seem to affect his output and lot of coin to have tied up on a player not delivering

Hey all, here's my front eight, which is bare of City players:

Downing - Sánchez - Eriksen (vc) - Hazard (Siggy)
    Kane (c) - Costa - Bony

Kane as captain is a calculated risk, but is there room to transfer in Yaya here (by which I mean can I justifiably transfer out Sánchez)? I'd captain him if I brought him in

    Cheers.

Cheers! Sánchez has given me no reason to sell him, and I bought him after his run of double figure GWs, which makes me want to keep him even more, as I don't think I've seen his best.

It's a fear of missing out on City's fixtures that has me considering the move to Yaya.

          Rock and a hard place!

I thought I was mental considering Kane as my captain. I'm having a rethink because of you now!

I am constantly swapping the armband between Eriksen and Kane. The fixture couldn't be much better, and Kane as captain would be a big differential, but a lot less assist potential.

I know it is the fixture that is so appealing. I normally wouldn't change from my premium striker, who is Costa at the moment, but being home to Burnley is a massive opportunity.

    De Gea / Hamer

    Terry - Azpilicueta - Naylor - Chambers - Duff

    Siggy - Hazard - Eriksen - Sanchez - Downing

    RVP - Bony - Austin

Is there really a need to squeeze in City players? If so, who to replace? 0 ITB

Don't see Chelsea loosing, so probably Costa. Dont see Hazard being the one to do it.
If not, I would go Bony.

    My team is:

    Keepers: Pantilimon (alternate: Howard)
    Defenders: Baines, Dummett, Wisdom
    Midfield: Fabregas, Hazard, Sigurdsson, Sanchez
    Strikers: Giroud, Welbeck, Sakho

I need some help - who would you captain this week? Already used my transfers, so I can't buy anymore new players. Also, Would you stick with Pantilimon or switch him out for Howard?

    Thanks!

    Who to bench?

    Mata - Eriksen - Yaya - Downing - Hazard

    Carroll (C) - Kane - Costa

Thinking its either Mata, or Kane. But both are inform! :S
Have a feeling about Carroll this week. But I know its risky to double down on both Spurs and West Ham.

if falcao starts alongside rooney and rvp this could hamper matas influence? however playing against a weak villa side, is a great opportunity for points

I already have Forster in goal with Bertrand in defence, is this too risky with Everton hitting form and the Saints doing the opposite? Should I replace Bertrand with Gun/Chambers from my bench?

Was very tempted myself, just worry about City's fire power and Crystal Palace are a good away side with how direct and pacey they are. Anyway I bottled that and went Carroll but he'll prob get sent off.

Who at the commencement of the season would have rated Charlie Austin, Harry Kane and Andy Carroll as top end points earners? Fair dinkum, the boys have done good. They don't have fancy CVS or European club P45's but have graced the league and also afforderd FPL adherents that magic touch which makes the game such fun and affords it a modicum of unpredictability let alone their propensity to unleash point fests. Let us hope that this trend continues eh~
