The Digest – Gameweek 19

Our last look back at the final Gameweek of 2014 brings Liverpool’s former Saint under assessment, whilst the Clarets’ fightback at Man City and the lack of reliable frontmen also afford us much to discuss.

The Player

It’s fair to say that Adam Lallana’s transition as a Liverpool player hasn’t been a seamless one. A guaranteed starter for Southampton last time around, he took his time to convince Brendan Rodgers – handed just seven appearances in the opening 13 Gameweeks, he served up just a goal and assist as the Merseysiders toiled from one match to the next.

With his team struggling for form, Rodgers has placed his faith in the former Saints skipper over the last month. Lallana has subsequently started all six league outings over December and vindicated his manager’s decision with three goals and an assist over that period, with a double against Swansea last night bringing him onto our Fantasy radars once again.

Rodgers’ new 3-4-3 system has not only helped arrest Liverpool’s slump, it’s brought their midfielders into consideration as the Reds boss relies on Lallana, Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho to lead the line in a high-pressing style of play which looks beyond the more lethargic Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert.

There’s no doubt that the nature of last night’s emphatic win over the Swans will give Rodgers’ side a real shot in the arm, and with the fixtures in their favour, Liverpool look poised to take advantage. As he showed last year, with nine goals and as many assists to his name, Lallana has the end product, providing his pitch time is guaranteed – with Leicester, Sunderland, Villa and West Ham in the next four, the 8.3-priced midfielder, who is owned by less than 1% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, may be poised to profit.

The Team

After heading into the Etihad dressing room two goals down at the break on Sunday afternoon, Burnley could have been forgiven for writing off their chances. City were on a roll, after all, and had won nine successive matches in all competitions, but in a stunning turnaround in fortunes, Sean Dyche’s side salvaged an unexpected points thanks to strikes from George Boyd and Ashley Barnes.

That morale-boosting draw could yet prove a pivotal point in the Clarets’ season. The Lancashire outfit still remain in the drop zone – albeit on goal difference alone – but one look at the following five fixtures (new, QPR, CPL, sun, WBA) suggests they have the chance to build on the momentum gained from Sunday’s result.

A single clean sheet in eight suggests that few will be keen to invest in the likes of Tom Heaton and Kieran Trippier at the back, but with four shut-outs already at Turf Moore, Burnley have shown they are capable of keeping out their opponents. Boyd’s returns from the flank hand his owners a quandary, though – mainly utilised as a bench-warmer by many, he could be a viable starter if he can kick on from this point. Up top, Barnes has now notched in three of his last four, whilst three goals and as many assists from Danny Ings in the last eight suggests that there’s plenty of reason for optimism as we enter the New Year period.

The Talking Point

Put frankly, Gameweek 19 was a complete write-off for the most popular forwards across the Fantasy games.

Diego Costa’s failure to score at Southampton, Charlie Austin’s blank at home to Crystal Palace and Spurs and United’s goalless draw at the Lane left the likes of Mame Biram Diouf, Ashley Barnes, Ayoze Perez and Danny Welbeck to hog the headlines and fire their owners up the rankings. Boasting an 11% ownership, Welbeck was the only popular forward amongst those scorers – having earned a single assist in his previous five, though, it’s fair to say he’s been far from prolific.

With Sergio Aguero still sidelined through injury, Olivier Giroud banned for a moment of madness and Wilfried Bony on the verge of departing for the Africa Cup of Nations, it’s arguable that there’s more diversity than ever before in our three-man frontlines. As the winter wildcard approaches, Fantasy managers are a little more willing to take gambles with their forwards to free up funds for the big-hitters in midfield – Alexis Sanchez, Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas have outscored every striker so far.

With a lack of reliable replacements up front, Aguero’s absence is making the armband decision a real lottery right now. Whilst his expected return in late January simply can’t come soon enough, it seems that for the time being that the restructuring process will continue until he’s back in contention. Given that the winter wildcard can be used at any point after Gameweek 20 gets underway until the end of Gameweek 23, it’s likely that our squads could retain this greater degree of variation until the Argentine’s comeback forces a re-think.

I made this move a few nights ago, as I got lucky once with Boyd rescuing Yaya, and am not going to rely on that luck again. So, this time, I got antsy, and moved Yaya to Silva. I will reap some minor economics and know that Yaya has to go soon anyway cos of ACON.

Best: Kun(c) 4 goals, Tadic Haul, Austin(c) hatty.

Worst: selling Costa for Balotelli when he was in doubt and missing his points, Dzeko injured in warm up.

Quick poll at the halfway point, best and worst FPL moments of the season so far?

For me: best must be captaining Aguero against Spurs, although Chester on the opening day and captaining Austin vs West Brom run it close.

Worst has to be GW12 when I watched my entire team except Costa and Bertrand blank. Although double red cards for Austin and Chambers was a pain.

BEST: Captaining Aguero against Spurs for his 4-goal bonanza and getting to sit at home and watch it grinning ear to ear because he was a huge differential at that point.

WORST: either leaving Siggy out of GW1 which set me back and annoyed me at the off, or genuinely thinking I had confirmed Costa (C) for his hattie only to find out at 11.45am I hadn't and it was on Sterling for a 1-pointer. Gutted.

Actually you are right I was furious with myself for picking Henderson over Siggi for GW1. That cost me a lot of points and a fair whack of cash too.

The mistake is gutting, nothing worse than making the right call but not actually putting it in place - I'm guessing you are spending the whole season checking what rank you'd be if you'd make the switch to Costa.

          You got it there!
I have made some bad (C) calls, which suck....but I knew the risk. When it comes to knowing 100% who you want to captain and you are assured its safe only to find out it's not in your own forgetfulness.....painful

Best: Captaining Austin 2 weeks ago which aided the recover of the moment below:

Worst: GW15. 29 (-4). 3 sendings off and an injury to Aguero (C)

Best moment to come? Hopefully finishing in the world's top 100. 189th at the moment.

The worst moment was surely the last gameweek and being kicked out of the cup by a dead team that fielded 6 players.

The best? Gameweeks 17 (GW rank 7k) and 18 (personal best OR).

So a lot happened in the last 3 gameweeks, apparently.

Best: GW8 with all its details, with Aguero (C), Tadic, Pelle, Sanchez and 13 pts of the bench.

Worst: Drafting in Chadli instead of Downing GW10

Can't think of a best moment really, maybe bringing in pelle or Kane right before they scored their first goals and went on to keep scoring.

Worst was bringing in Coleman for his goal cleansheet and 3 bonus, only to realise I accidentally benched him for oshea the week Sunderland conceded 8. He was last on my bench too, and the other two benched players came on.

Am I right in thinking wildcard transfers aren't taken into account for price changes?
If not, could be some interesting price dynamics...
For example, everyone loses Baines on wildcard, he hits form and then his price could become astronomical!

I thought it was just that the price prediction sites couldn't see the wildcard transfers. That's why they can't be 100% accurate.

They surely still affect price changes.

Looking to transfer out Chambers. Moreno a decent option? Do people think he will start on the left from now on?

Well it worked, so yes...probably. Liverpool finally looked the part last night.

Looks a great option when on the field but having started 2 in 7 it's still a bit of a risk.

Agree maybe after Leicester if he starts we have a better idea. That said of course potential points could be missed too.

Fixtures look good for them too for the next month & he does provide good attacking threat.

I'd like to suggest FFS scout dedicates and hour each day to TotalFPL Live Chat style posting.

It might help clear up the rest of the day. Everyone can get their lol's out their system.

    A sort of therapy session.

Can't see this being a smart move. It's like dedicating a certain thread for LOL chat or everyday junk, but it always gets out of hand. It'll end up being spammed with NSFW junk.

Any sort of advice from you intelligent lot would be massively appreciated. On a slide down the rankings the last few weeks...

    Hart
    Baines Azpi Zab (Naylor, Moore)
Hazard (c) Siggy Yaya Downing (vc)
    Costa Benteke Austin

1 FT and 1.6m itb. Any ideas? I'm thinking Yaya > Sterling/Silva if hes confirmed out.

If you we're going to move Sakho to Kane next week would you do it now? It won't cost me ewt so thinking more for price changes and Sakho is on my bench at the min anyway as I can't fit him in

I'd do it now, Kane going up again this week Sakho could go down. You may not need the money for this trade, but what about the next? Shame to be .1 or 2 short of what you need then.

Judging by wengers comments, welbeck is definitely not and walcott not sharp enough to start just yet

Podolski or sanogo to start then. Can't see sanchez playing up top unless podolski starts on the wing

  30. Here's the manager
    • 11 Years
    9 years, 9 months ago

    Guzan
    Terry Chambers Wisdom Naylor Clyne
    Samchez Downing Siggy Hazard Eriksen
    Costa Austin Bony
    0.2 2FT

Thinking I will save Bony for this week and use 1FT. Who's the priority?

    A Chambers to 4.9 max
    B Clyne to 5.8 max.
    Thanks
