Captain Sensible – Gameweek 27

Our pre-Gameweek members article which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

With Chelsea and Spurs out of the weekend equation, Sergio Aguero is the leading option (24%) ahead of City’s tough trip to Liverpool. The Argentine has delivered points in each of his last four Gameweeks and a midweek strike against Barcelona means he’s scored in three successive matches in all competitions. Delving into the data, Liverpool have been far more impressive on the road in recent matches – although they’ve chalked up five straight shut-outs on their travels, the Reds have kept out their opponents in just one of the last five at Anfield.

Arsenal’s home encounter with Everton sees Alexis Sanchez sit in second spot. Over 18% have backed the Chilean to end a three-match barren spell against a defence that’s just conceded twice at home to Leicester. Sanchez has scored or assisted in eight of his ten home starts, whilst Olivier Giroud – backed by 6% – has racked up three goals and two assists in his last four starts. Santi Cazorla is also in contention, with 5% looking to the Spaniard to maintain the form that has produced three sets of double figures in the last five Gameweeks.

With our options somewhat limited, a couple of misfiring options are also ranked highly. Romelu Lukaku – with a single league goal in the last 12 Gameweeks – and Angel Di Maria, who has failed to find the net since Gameweek 7, have both been selected by 11%. Stewart Downing remains under the radar, with just 4% of the votes cast as the Hammers welcome Palace to Upton Park. David Silva is backed by 3% for City’s trip to Anfield, though Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling hover around the 1% mark in spite of their visitors’ dire defensive displays.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I've been plenty critical of him but I really feel sorry for him there tbh.

Not sure if Rodgers got it right, they've a lot of penalty takers in that team...

I thought Liverpool had found their natural level in the Europa League. Seems like even that is too hot for them. Still I guess you shouldn't expect more from a team ranked 40th in Europe.

Hmm... that despite Silva being more central. Nasty also got a good rest on midweek. 😉

He should start, despite bad match against Barcelona, since he has been performing recently.

Rubbish, he has been holding out for a bigger contract repeatedly and one thing I'd expect from him is to step up and take a penalty. So no, it wasn't stupid. If you want to think the sun shines out his arse, feel free.

Its funny, "you people" on here hate on BR for beeing positive to a fault, but when Mourinho does his antics, its entertaining and he does it to protect his players. The hypocrisy is real. Have you even considered it a little that he was tired and just didnt want to take a penalty? Does that make him a money grabbing wonderkid who thinks hes better than everyone? No? Then shut the fk up.

I definitely understand resting a younger player for a game or two when they've played a lot, Owen for example was played too much and wound up frequently crocked. But in this case it was a matter of taking a penalty, expected him to come forward.

    Forster (Hamer)
Clyne - Vergini - Dawson - Hutton (Terry)
Sanchez - Di Maria - Cazorla - Boyd (Hazard)
    Aguero - Giroud (Kane)

    1FT, 0.3 in bank

Should I use my free to shift Hutton? If so, £4.7 to spend... McShane? Wollscheid?

Only saw that he was doubtful now, still not worth a FT imo.

What do we think will be the effect of Arsenal's thumping yesterday on their lineup against Everton? It was a generally poor performance from them but some individuals had a shocker. The players likely to be in risk of not starting IMO are:

    1) Bellerin. Had a very shaky game. Caught out of position way too often. Chance of not starting: 80%
    2) Ozil. A shocking game. He tends to disappoint in big games. Played every game ( I think) since he has been back from injury. Chance of not starting 50%.
    3) Cazorla. Wasn't that bad but is due a rest especially with Wilshere back. I think one of him or Ozil will be dropped. Chance of not starting50%
    4) Mertsacker. If he wasn't club captain, I'd say Gabriel definitely takes his place as he was the worst Arsenal player on the night. Chance of not starting 60%
    5) Giroud. 6 shots zero on target but Arsenal will need his aerial prowess against Jagielka. Chance of not starting 40%.

    What do you guys think?

Saying chance of starting is better, as follows

      1. 40%
      2.65%
      3. 95%
      4.80%
      5. 75%

Can't Giroud being dropped, maybe one of Caz/Ozil.

Wouldn't be at all surprised to see Gabriel, Bellerin & Ox in for Mert, Bellerin & Caz/Ozil.

Wilshere also back into the squad and coukd easily come into CDM. Schzney to return to goals soon too..

      Chances of starting:

      75%
      100%
      100%
      100%
      100%

Mertesacker and Giroud had shocking games but they will start. Only one not nailed on is Bellerin.

One of those weeks where I wish you could roll to have 3 FT but unfortunately we can't.

It seems like the only way to start heading toward my "ideal" team would be to do one of Silva/Sanchez/Cazorla to Sterling this week. Is this madness? If not, which one would you choose to get rid?

clearly when the Liverpool players huddled around, when it came to the 5th taker no one wanted it. All not confident.

So Lovren, who probably wanted to prove to the fans his quality and stepped up confidently saying he will take it. "my time is now" "live for the moment" show no fear"

It was a god awful pen but i'm not blaming him for the defeat.

So I pulled the trigger yesterday on Wisdom -->> Bertrand with my 1FT and wake up this morning to Hutton with a 50% chance of playing because of a 'knock'. FFS man up 😉 . No way i'm taking a hit though.

I can't see why anyone is faulting Lovren this game. He's an easy scapegoat. They played harder than us and showed more effort. We were poor offensively and let them come at us all game. It was inevitable they'd score. His passing was poor but he was trying to create something considering our midfield wasn't. I wouldn't expect any CB to be a good penalty taker either. The question is, did he want to be 5th or did Rodgers select him?

I think the consensus here is that Sterling should have taken it rather than Lovren - in fairness he at least had the balls to step up to take it
