Development Squad – Update Four Is Live

Update Four is now live, introducing heatmaps as a major new feature, along with another round of tweaks and improvements.

Once again Matz1lla has done us proud with his efforts, as we continue to work at enhancing the site and tools on offer.

Here’s what’s included in this update:

Team and Player Heatmaps
As mentioned in our preview article, we’ve tried to go the extra mile with our heatmaps feature.

I always wanted to ensure that, when these were included in our members’ area, they would work with the ability to slice the Opta data by intervals – eg Gameweeks, matches, home and away etc.

Implemented in this way, they suddenly become more effective as a method of analysing player and team performance, not just in a single match, but in a group of fixtures or over the entire season.

So heatmaps can now be found in player and team profiles and in the player and team comparison tools.

You can also get them in the match dashboard, to view traditional team or single player maps for a particular fixture.

We’ve added maps for the following statistics:

Touches
Passes Received
Shots
Chances Created
Recoveries
Challenges Lost
Successful Take ons
Failed Take ons
Goal Attempts Conceded (teams only)
Chances Created Conceded (teams only)
Fouls Conceded (teams only)

Hazard vs Pedro – Touches – 2016/17 All Matches
members

The preview movie below shows the heatmaps in action and the options and possibilities available.

Heatmaps Preview Movie

If you’ve any feedback on the maps or have any requests on other statistics you would like to see mapped, please get in touch via support@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

Bonus Points System additions
Having added the Baseline Bonus Points System statistics in Update Three, we’ve tweaked this further and implemented the statistics to both the player profiles and player comparison tools.

Baseline BPS is now included as a key statistic when comparing players.

Fantasy Goal Involvement
We’ve always included the goal involvement statistic.

This measured a player’s contribution in terms of goals scored or assisted as a percentage of his team’s goals scored when he was on the pitch.

We’ve now expanded this to offer a new statistic, which takes into account Fantasy assists. This is now found on the player statistic Involvement tables.

What’s coming next?
We’re looking to add Fantasy Premier League prices to our database in order to surface these in our profiles and player tables. The aim is to introduce the ability to filter tables by these prices.

We will then move to include Sky Sports prices in their tables and also build Yahoo Daily Fantasy tables, which will hopefully include player prices for the forthcoming contests.

Expected goals remains a background task as we continue to research and explore options for our model.

Once the season begins, we will also start to address improvements away from the Members’ area and, in particular, look at our HomeCrowd comments system.

You can see our current task list and track our progress through the next update via this roadmap.

You can also send your feedback and requests to me at mark@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

Our previous updates are detailed here, here and here.

A reminder that, if you want access to this forthcoming update and other future additions to the members’ area, you can sign up for the new campaign now for our pre-season price of £12.50 (RRP £15.00).

Existing registered users can upgrade via this link. New users, who are yet to get a registered account, can sign up via this link.

If you’re new to the benefits of Fantasy Football Scout membership, you can get full details, along with a series of movies previewing the content, via this page.

Due to the new site additions, if you encounter any loading issues with the images in comparison tool, we advise clearing the browser cache (shift and F5) to resolve this.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Do we think Salah is safe from rotation around the CL qualifiers?

Rotation is overblown here as always. Some reduced minutes, 70 instead of 90 maybe if needed.

They threw the league back then and put everything in Europa league, weak comparison.

lol what? If anything it's the most relevant comparison as it's to do with rotation around European fixtures

Late on in the season, players are tired. They couldn't gain many places in the league. You don't want to drop points this early on.

Not sure. Any of them could get rotated. I'd imagine one attacker will not start one, and a couple will get early subs

Coutinho & Lallana seem to be the lost rotation prone.
Mane is just coming back from injury so I think he might get rotated a bit.
Tbh I feel Salah is the safest maybe 1 or 2 subs on 70 mins.

Coutinho & Lallana both high up the list.
They get subbed alot and Coutinho will subbed the most during European fixtures imo.

Interesting table. Not sure how valid it is to consider a player more rotation prone - many of these go off after the game is over to protect them because they are so essential eg. Hazard

    The Kane vs Lukaku Rotation

My current strategy regarding my Premier Striker, who will start off the season partnering Jesus, is to switch Kane and Lukaku in and out of the squad with the intention of garnering easier fixtures and mostly avoiding difficult ones. It goes something like this

GW1-4 Start with Lukaku [WH, swa, LEI, stk] (Avoids Kanes match ups of CHE & eve)
GW5-8 Transfer in Kane [SWA, wh, hud, BOU] avoids (liv)
GW9-14 Lukaku in [hud, TOT, che, NEW, BHA,wat] (avoids LIV, mun ars)
GW15-17 Kane in [wat, STK, BHA] (avoids ars, MCI)
    GW18-27 Lukaku in [wba,lei,BUR,SOT,eve,STK,bur,tot,HUD,new] (avoids mci,MUN,liv,ARS)
GW28-31 Kane in [cp, HUD, bou, NEW] (avoids CHE, LIV)
GW32-34 Lukaku in [SWA,mci,WBA] (avoids che, MCI)
GW35-38 Kane in [bha,WAT, wba, LEI] (aoids ARS)

Requires 7 transfers in total, and of course when Lukaku is in you need 1m itb.

Really struggling with this. My logical side is saying Salah + 6m mid because it spreads around the risk more, and I already have 2 captaincy options in Kane and Lukaku. On the other hand I fear Jesus' explosiveness and excellent PPG, and I would get a potentially playing 4.5m mid on the bench instead of a non-playing 4.5m forward (when I already have a non-playing 4m defender).

    1) Salah + 6m mid (Phillips/Ritchie) + Quaner
    2) Jesus + Carroll + RLC

    Rest of my team:

    Foster (Myhill)
    Alonso - Milner - Trippier - Cedric (4m)
Alli - Salah - Stanislas - Phillips (Carroll)
    Kane - Lukaku (Quaner)

    OR

    Foster (Myhill)
    Alonso - Milner - Trippier - Cedric (4m)
Alli - Stanislas - Carroll (RLC, Chalobah)
    Kane - Lukaku - Jesus

I hesitated on both of them for those reasons, but I think Alonso is as fixture proof a defender as you get. As for Milner, I think he will get rotated a few times with Robertson, but will starts 8/10 matches at least. With penalties, I think that makes him worth it, especially as I haven't been convinced by any 6.5-7m midfield options. If I downgrade them to a 5/5.5 defenders, I'm not really happy with what I can do with the upgrade money in midfield.

After weeks of stubbornness, am coming round to the concept of a Kane-less starting team. And may have just talked myself into Austin.

Thoughts on the following? Relatively light on defence....

    DDG (Elliott)
    Monreal, Yoshida, Alexander-Arnold, (Suttner, 4.0)
    KDB, Salah, Alli, Fraser (Carroll)
    Lukaku, Jesus, Austin

Previous line up had Kane, Lukaku and Ayew up front. Ake in defence instead of Monreal.

Show me some teams with both Kane and Sanchez in!

I decided to try a Sanchez team to see what would happen. I love the result

        442

        Elliot // 4.0
        Trippier // Cedric // Hegazi // Naughton // Suttner
        Alexis // Salah // Mkhitaryan // Willian // T. Carroll
        Kane // Jesus // 4.5

No compromise in midfield quality over my normal 343 drafts. Also I'm spending the same in defense as I plan to for my normal 343 drafts, but with those the last 3 defenders are 5.0/4.5/4.0, but here 3x 4.5's are better to allow rotation options for the 442.

I guess one compromise is Kane + Mkhi rather than the more popular Lukaku + Alli (costs 0.5 more), but I like this combination better anyway.

And honestly Elliot is as good a value if not better than Foster as long as they don't sign another GK.

*** I worked out the defense rotation with the idea of 442. But now I realize you can also play a 352 with Carroll starting sometimes, which allowed more flexibility and also allows you to get some better defensive teams than Swansea for example.

*** Jesus + Mkhi could be --> Lukaku + Zaha, which some people prefer and is more popular in terms of ownership

When I first posted this here a few hours ago I got 3 comments asking me if it was within budget, so I guess that means it's good 🙂

I like it a lot... but just not quite enough.
Goalies & 4.5m forward put me off but a good base as I'm in the no-Kane camp.

        2. Excellent effort. 8.5/10.

Thanks. I like that it doesn't have any mids under 7.0, as none of them are going to be that consistent of scorers that I can tell as of yet (meaning 2-3 blanks and people will start selling)

I assume Sánchez will be stationed wide, rather than up front, this season now that Lacazette is on board.

Does this make him less or more of an option in your opinion?

Probably weakens his points potential, but we'll have to watch them play together.

      I've been thinking about captains.

I've seen a mixture of teams, some with a couple of serious heavy hitters and some that have spread the love and gone for more "very good" players.

With the spread the love approach, you can potentially get more points each week, but picking a captain can be harder and less reliable. This would leave you rotating between options like Alli, Pogba, Salah. Yes, they may score big, but will they be consistent enough to identify when?

The other option is to go for one or two reliable captain options, such as Kane and Lukaku, then build the rest of your squad around them.

Which approach do you tend to go for?

      A) spread the love
      B) build around a couple of heavy hitters

      Also, while we're at it...

Who would you consider to be truly captainable players?

Who would they be for each of the big teams?

      Here's mine:

Arsenal - Alexis last season, possibly Lacazette this year?

Chelsea - Hazard when he's back

Liverpool - no-one, points are too spread out

Man City - previously Aguero. Now possibly KDB or Jesus, but uncertainty of starts makes them tricky

      Man Utd - Lukaku

      Tottenham - Kane

      1. Willian could be the Ultimate GW1 punt,Also Benteke

        Yes

    9. RMT
      Foster(Elliot)
      Trippier Kompany Bertrand Daniels (Rangel)
      Alli Pogba Willian KDB (Carroll)
      Lukaku Jesus (Quaner)
Should I do Bertrand to Dawson/Cedric to upgrade weak defence?
      How to get Salah in?

If Elliot starts the season as No. 1, then Foster > 4.0 and Bertrand > Yoshida frees up the 1.0m to go Pogba > Salah

route into an arsenal team IMO definitely gonna fill the boots of some poor injured soul. Guaranteed goals too for 7.5
